Job Summary
The Department of Neurosurgery is the sole provider of neurosurgical care in the West of London (previously North West Thames Region). Comprehensive neurosurgical care is delivered for both emergency and elective adult cranial and spinal patients, as well as paediatric neurotrauma cases, across Charing Cross Hospital (CXH) and St Mary’s Hospital (SMH). These sites feature multiple imaging scanners, endovascular equipment, and a 24/7 thrombectomy service. The Spinal Unit covers a wide catchment area across northwest London, offering elective, emergency, simple, and complex spinal reconstruction surgery, and serves as a tertiary referral centre for the region.

Role Overview
The Imperial Spinal Surgery Fellowship focuses on advancing the theory and practice of spinal surgery. Fellows form part of the spinal team and are supervised by the current clinical lead, Mr Ibrahim, as well as Mr Kalsi, Mr Kareem, Mr Lee, Mr Russo, Mr Tsang, and Mr Ulbricht. The fellowship will rotate across St Mary’s and Charing Cross hospitals on a 1:3 rota covering emergency, elective, and ward duties.
Responsibilities
The Spinal Fellow should be familiar with the basic principles of evaluation and treatment of spinal patients and will gain experience in the exposure of the entire spine, including anterior, posterior, and lateral approaches. The role includes use of the operating microscope and minimally invasive techniques, and participation in high‑volume spinal endoscopy procedures.
