Cemetery Officer
Grade 3 – £24,796 to £25,989 per annum
We are seeking a compassionate, organised and respectful Cemetery Officer to support the day-to-day operations of our cemeteries, helping to deliver dignified, professional burial services and maintain our cemeteries as peaceful places of remembrance for families and visitors, ensuring services are delivered smoothly, lawfully and with care.
About us
East Staffordshire Borough Council run and operate the 150-year old Stapenhill Cemetery and the newer smaller site in Rolleston. These locations provide a resting place for residents of all denominations from across East Staffordshire and neighbouring areas. As well as offering burial services the Cemetery team can assist in finding a relative’s grave, provide guidance on the completion of burial paperwork and have responsibility for monitoring contractor performance to ensure the visual appearance of the Cemetery is of the highest standard.
The Role
This role has been created to support the daily operations of the Cemetery. This is a largely independent role, working alone, but you will also be expected to work with the Cemetery and wider Open Spaces teams.
Responsibilities
• Oversee burials and ensure that they meet the statutory legal requirements. • Process burial paperwork and maintain accurate burial records. • Work independently and use initiative. • Communicate effectively and handle sensitive information and situations. • Be prepared to oversee weekday evening burials and provide cover for the on-call weekend rota. • Monitor contractor performance to ensure high visual standards in the Cemetery.
Qualifications and Requirements
• A full, valid driving licence is essential. • The ability to work on your own and use your own initiative. • Good communication skills; ability to handle sensitive information. • Basic office and word processing skills are an advantage. • Experience of working in a team and handling contractors is desirable. • Knowledge of working with partner agencies.

There will be an occasional requirement to oversee weekday evening burials and provide cover for the on-call weekend rota. Subject to satisfactory completion of the probationary period there will be an opportunity to complete a formal qualification in Cemetery management.
