Wage

£16,640 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age. National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices applies.

Hours and Duration

Four days a week in the workplace and one day per week at college. Saturday is one of the working days; possibly a late night on Thursday. 40 hours a week. 2‑year apprenticeship.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands‑on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting stylists with day‑to‑day salon tasks
  • Greeting and looking after clients to ensure a welcoming experience
  • Shampooing, conditioning, and preparing clients for services
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organisation of the salon
  • Learning a wide range of hairdressing techniques and skills
  • Adhering to legal and organisational requirements for safe use of products, tools, materials and equipment
  • Applying safe, hygienic, and effective methods during hairdressing services
  • Using communication and etiquette that meets industry requirements
  • Maintaining client confidentiality and comfort
  • Advising clients on maintenance, complementary services and retail products
  • Promoting yourself, the salon, products and services via social channels
  • Carrying out wider salon duties to support the business (services, bookings, payments, retail, upselling, sales)
  • Using products, tools and equipment per legal requirements
  • Completing and maintaining client records
  • Working as part of a team to support the salon business
  • Using working methods that promote environmental and sustainable practices
  • Conducting consultations and hair, skin, scalp analysis, and industry tests
  • Identifying contraindications or limiting factors that may affect the service
  • Performing core hairdressing services such as cutting, styling, colouring and lightening, and evaluating results
  • Work towards Level 2 Hairdressing apprenticeship standard
  • Receive on‑and‑off‑the‑job training and support from an assessor and apprenticeship advisor
  • Attend Cornwall College, St Austell, one day per week as part of training

Requirements

  • GCSE in Maths grade 4

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
