Clinical Psychologist
Band 7 – Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust – Sunderland (Monkwearmouth Hospital, Gateshead Health Centre, Cleadon Park Town)
Job Overview
We are looking for a Clinical Psychologist to join the Community Acquired Brain Injury Service (CABIS) on a 30‑hour per week basis, with flexibility to arrange hours. The role is based in the Sunderland, Gateshead and South Tyneside localities and offers a pathway for growth in neuro‑psychology.
Main Duties
- Conduct comprehensive neuro‑psychological assessments of adults (16+) with acquired brain injury (ABI) and head injuries.
- Deliver specialist cognitive, behavioural and psycho‑educational interventions to patients and their carers.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to formulate rehabilitation plans and monitor progress.
- Provide expert advice and support to other NHS services within the Trust and to local acute and community services.
- Supervise and support junior staff, contributing to their professional development.
- Conduct individual and group therapy, involving families and carers where appropriate.
- Provide regular supervision, team formulation and risk‑management advice.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
- Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, and at least two distinct psychological therapies, accredited by the British Psychological Society and the HCPC.
- HCPC registered practitioner psychologist.
- Pre‑qualification training in research methodology, staff training and/or applied psychology fields.
Skills and Competencies
- Expertise in complex psychological assessment, intervention and management techniques.
- Evidence‑based clinical practice and the ability to implement it within the NHS.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, able to convey complex, technical or clinically sensitive information to a range of stakeholders.
- Experience in providing consultation to professional and non‑professional groups.
- Strong organisational and time‑management skills, able to juggle multiple clinical priorities.
Knowledge and Experience
- Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment across care settings (outpatient, community, primary care and inpatient).
- Experience working with diverse client groups across the life course, including those with severe and enduring mental health problems, psychosis and personality disorder.
- Pharmacological knowledge of psychosocial medication regimes often used alongside psychological interventions.
- Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology and data analysis, and capacity to conduct or contributory clinical research.
- Experience of teaching, training and/or clinical supervision.
- Ability to apply psychological practice within culturally diverse contexts.
- Familiarity with relevant mental‑health legislation.
