The Role

This is a hands‑on strategic leadership role responsible for the full IT function across the group, including in‑house software development capability.

You Will:

  • Own IT operations, infrastructure, applications, and security
  • Lead a small internal development team delivering business‑critical applications
  • Drive digital transformation and innovation
  • Partner with business leaders to deliver commercial value through technology

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Define and deliver the IT and technology roadmap aligned to business goals
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the Board and senior stakeholders
  • Lead, mentor, and develop:
    • IT support and infrastructure teams
    • In‑house software development team
  • Manage third‑party vendors and technology partners

Software Development & Innovation

  • Lead and manage a small team of developers building and supporting internal applications
  • Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of in‑house systems and integrations
  • Ensure solutions are:
    • Scalable
    • Secure
    • Well‑architected and documented
  • Contribute at a technical level where required (hands‑on leadership)
  • Establish development best practices including:
    • Code quality and standards
    • Version control and deployment processes
    • Testing and release management
  • Identify opportunities to enhance systems through:
    • Automation
    • AI and intelligent workflows
    • Improved customer and colleague experiences

Operations & Infrastructure

  • Ensure high availability and performance of all systems across multiple sites
  • Oversee:
    • Microsoft stack (Azure, M365, Entra, Intune)
    • Network, servers, storage, and endpoints
    • IT service management and support delivery
  • Maintain robust disaster recovery and business continuity plans

Applications & Systems

  • Own and optimise core business systems including:
    • Dealer Management Systems (e.g. Pinewood or similar)
    • CRM / lead management platforms (e.g. ePro or equivalent)
    • Finance and operational systems
  • Drive integration between in‑house and third‑party platforms

Data & Reporting

  • Lead the development of a modern data and reporting capability
  • Oversee:
    • SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, and reporting platforms
    • Data quality, governance, and accessibility
  • Enable the business with actionable insights and automation

Cyber Security & Compliance

  • Own the organisation’s cyber security posture
  • Implement best practices across:
    • Identity and access management
    • Endpoint and network security
    • Monitoring and threat response
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations (e.g. GDPR)

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience in a Head of IT / IT Manager / IT Director role
  • Experience leading software development teams and delivering in‑house applications
  • Strong technical background across:
    • Microsoft technologies (Azure, M365, security)
    • Application development environments (e.g. .NET, APIs, integrations)
  • Experience in multi‑site environments
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Infrastructure & cloud services
    • Data platforms (SQL, reporting)
    • System integration and architecture
  • Excellent stakeholder and vendor management skills

Desirable

  • Experience in automotive retail or multi‑site retail environments
  • Exposure to Dealer Management Systems (e.g. Pinewood, Keyloop, etc.)
  • Experience with AI, automation, or digital transformation initiatives
  • Familiarity with modern development practices (DevOps, CI/CD)
