Specialty Doctor – Medical Microbiology

This is a fixed term (min 12 months) Specialty Doctor post in Medical Microbiology & Infection to the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT). The post is whole-time equivalent (Amounting to 10-programmed activities). The successful applicant will join a team of 7 consultants (6 full time equivalent), a Specialty Doctor, a Microbiology Specialty Registrar and a rotational Microbiology FY2.

Remit will be to provide clinical microbiology and infection control services for LGT (including participation in on call cover) as part of the wider Clinical Microbiology / Infection Team. The postholder will work under the supervision of an Infection / Microbiology Consultant.

Main Duties

  • Provide high quality medical microbiology and infection control support to clinicians in hospital and community.
  • Work closely with Consultant Microbiology & Infection colleagues, Antimicrobial pharmacists, Infection Control Team and Laboratory staff to deliver a high quality Microbiology and Infection Prevention & Control Service.
  • Support and contribute to the development of agreed protocols in antimicrobial usage in the hospital and for OPAT.
  • Conduct regular ward rounds and participate in MDTs, especially to promote prudent use of antimicrobials.
  • Authorise accurate, timely and interpretive reports to clinicians.
  • Support innovative measures in the department to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Participate and facilitate accreditation and other inspections by external agencies.
  • Develop services with colleagues within and outside the Trust.
  • Liaise with microbiology staff within the ESEL Partnership and neighbouring Trusts including the Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC).
  • Participate in day‑to‑day and on‑call infection prevention & control activities.

Detailed Job Description & Additional Responsibilities

  • Support the Consultant Microbiologists in providing clinical and laboratory services to the Trust.
  • Take part in the cross‑site on‑call rota. On‑call duties (Category A) include attending the laboratory at weekends and supporting predictable weekend work from home.
  • Commit to 26 weeknights and 4 weekends (Sat/Sun) over the six‑month post.
  • Annual and study leave are covered internally with no locum cover.
  • Undertake CME/CPD as required by the relevant medical Royal College and facilitated by Trust funds.
  • Participate in clinical governance and maintain clinical and laboratory standards.
  • Participate in audit using the Trust audit facilities.
  • Teach and train resident doctors, medical students, scientific staff and other allied healthcare professionals.
  • Provide continuing clinical input for patients in the Trust’s care and, in partnership with colleagues, work towards the smooth running of the department.
  • Subscribe to the research governance policies of the organisation.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Medical Microbiology as required.
  • Advise on day‑to‑day and on‑call infection control activities.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Completion of at least 4 years’ full‑time postgraduate training (or equivalent part‑time/flexible); at least 2 years in a specialty training programme or as a fixed‑term specialty trainee in Medical Microbiology or Infectious Diseases.
  • Equivalent experience and competencies in Medical Microbiology or Infectious Diseases.
  • Evidence of equivalence to UK qualifications for partially or non‑UK trained applicants.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • FRCPath.
  • Additional higher qualification e.g., MSc, PhD, MD.

Experience

  • Participation in clinical Microbiology/Infection on‑call rota.
  • Ability to deliver service without direct supervision.
  • Evidence of adequate training and experience in Medical Microbiology and Infection control.
  • Evidence of training and experience in Infectious Diseases.
  • Experience and ability to take managerial responsibility in a Microbiology Department.

Clinical Audit

  • Experience and ability to take managerial responsibility in a Microbiology Department.

  • Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice).
