£130k – £150k – Hybrid working from London (2 weekly office days)

Role Purpose

As Head of Engineering, you will play a critical role in scaling the engineering organisation to support the company’s next phase of growth. You will be responsible for building and leading a high-performing engineering function that consistently delivers customer value through reliable, secure, and scalable systems.

You will establish a clear engineering operating model, define technical and organisational direction, and develop Engineering Managers and senior individual contributors. Your leadership will ensure teams operate with strong execution discipline and clear expectations around quality, delivery, ownership, and collaboration.

Skills and Experience

Strategy & Architecture

  • Define pragmatic technical direction aligned with business objectives and growth plans.
  • Lead architecture reviews and establish decision-making frameworks that promote scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Drive engineering standards across system design, security, testing, observability, and operational excellence.
  • Balance technical trade-offs effectively, ensuring solutions optimise reliability, delivery speed, simplicity, and long-term sustainability.

Organisational Leadership

  • Design team structures, ownership models, and operating rhythms that support scale and organisational effectiveness.
  • Create clear accountability frameworks and escalation paths that reduce friction and improve execution.
  • Establish planning and prioritisation processes that align engineering resources with business objectives.
  • Continuously evolve organisational structures and ways of working to support changing company needs.

People & Performance Management

  • Build, coach, and develop Engineering Managers and senior individual contributors.
  • Implement consistent performance management practices, including regular 1:1s, feedback cycles and development plans
  • Ensure hiring, promotion, and performance decisions are evidence-based, fair, and aligned with company standards.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, ownership, learning, and continuous improvement across the engineering organisation.

Delivery & Operational Excellence

  • Use delivery, quality, reliability, and operational metrics to improve planning accuracy and execution.
  • Identify risks and dependencies early, implementing mitigation strategies before they impact outcomes.
  • Lead post-incident reviews and operational retrospectives, ensuring lessons learned result in measurable improvements.
  • Drive predictable, high-quality delivery while balancing speed, technical debt, and business priorities.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Partner closely with cross functional teams.
  • Help shape product and technology strategies through early validation, experimentation, and informed decision-making.
  • Ensure engineering initiatives are linked to measurable customer outcomes and business impact.
  • Build strong relationships across the organisation and act as a trusted technology leader.
