Job overview
Due to promotion of the previous postholder, this role to lead psychology in healthcare services for adults and to provide clinical services within the cardiothoracic board at Newcastle Hospitals is now being advertised. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to both operational and strategic leadership of a busy, growing, friendly and supportive team. You will join a committed group of leads in our paediatric, neuropsychology, community and specialist services and and will work closely with the CPPO to maintain and develop services.

Main duties of the job
Your duties will include:
- To ensure delivery of a high quality, comprehensive specialist psychological service
- To have responsibility, in consultation with the CPPO, for the professional leadership, planning, systematic provision and review of the adult services across Psychology in Healthcare at NuTH.
- To provide professional leadership and management, ensuring systematic governance of the service ensuring that systems are in place and working effectively for the clinical and professional supervision of the psychological professionals.
- Provides a highly specialised and experienced psychological service for patients with the most complex/challenging presentations including highly specialist psychological assessments and interventions.
- To support research, evaluation, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice of the service
- As a senior member of staff, you will be required to represent the Head of Clinical Service at planning, management, and other fora.
- Supervision of qualified psychological professionals , assistant psychologists and other clinical staff as required.
- Research and clinical supervision of doctoral trainees.
- To provide training where required.

Person specification
Qualifications & Education
- Entry-level qualification in applied psychological therapy in mental health and demonstrable practice in this field (Professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level with postqualification supervised practice and additional training) that has been accepted for the purposes of professional registration.
- Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialist areas of psychological practice with evidence of considerable experience of working as a practitioner psychologist in Health Services, specifically within physical health settings.
- Substantial post qualification experience as a Psychological Professional including experience at a senior level.
- Registered with professional body as appropriate to discipline HCPC
Knowledge & Experience
- Evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC.
- Has considerable experience of caseload/workload management and supervision and leadership of others.
- Considerable experience of the assessment, treatment, and management of care for the most complex and challenging clinical presentations.
- Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and also within the context of a multi-disciplinary care plan
- Experience of representing the profession in local policy/management fora.
- Experience of delivering psychological interventions in healthcare settings including waiting list management and service prioritisation.
- Knowledge of legislation and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to the client group and mental health.
- Formal training in supervision of other psychologists.
- Has evidence of learning and development in relation to leadership/management.
- Has knowledge of good practice in recruitment and retention.
- Has a well-developed level of knowledge regarding key policies and drivers within the NHS, locally and nationally
- Leadership or management training (eh. NHS Leadership Academy courses)
- Experience of multi-professional management of teams or services within the designated specialty.
- Have substantial post qualification experience including within acute hospital -based or longterm health conditions.
- Experience of the application of psychological practice in different cultural contexts
- Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of highly specialised psychological therapies.
- Experience of working within a multicultural framework.
- Has a track record of professional management of qualified and pre-qualified clinical psychologists.
- Record of having published in either peer reviewed or academic or professional journals and/or books.
