Dermatology Nurse Specialist

Job overview

You will have responsibility for management and organisation of resources and provision of care under the supervision of the head of services.

You will have direct clinical input and actively participate in the continued development of the service. To develop as a Leader within the unit. Role modelling and development of staff and to assist the Senior Nurse with the management of Patients and Staff in the unit.

To deliver quality care that is individualised to our patient group. Deliver care that is safe, forward thinking and evidence based and to provide specialist clinical advice regarding the service and treatment of patients and their families, which is based on the latest available evidence of best practice.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide clinical and managerial expertise in all aspects of skin and wound care in all clinical areas, ensuring patients and their families/carers receive the highest possible standard of care, with effective and efficient utilisation of resources
  • To assist in the development and implementation of directorate policy and nursing within the unit. The post holder will deputise for the Dermatology Nurse Manager in their absence
  • To act as a resource for education and clinical expertise for the hospital and community setting for the dermatology patients.
  • To co‑coordinate the provision of services for patients receiving systemic therapies to ensure evidence‑based care is delivered and bridging the gap between primary, secondary and other health care providers.
  • To develop and maintain nurse‑led services within dermatology, writing and updating protocols to meet the needs of this patient population.
  • Reviews and coordinates the daily workload for dermatology taking into account priorities and skill mix.
  • To have knowledge and understanding of Government Trust and Departmental targets to support the achievement of them through dissemination to junior staff.
  • To manage own workload, within nurse‑led clinics.
  • To actively be involved in management of staff within the Dermatology Unit, this will involve direct line management of staff workload; the throughput of services, reviewing/creating protocols to aid service improvement, efficiency and quality of care in Dermatology.

Person specification

Qualifications / Training

  • Substantial experience at Band 6 in Surgical Field
  • Experience within Dermatology
  • Successful completion of skin surgical module or willing to undertake
  • Non Medical Prescriber V300
  • Teaching Qualification

Knowledge / Experience

  • Evidence of clinical and Academic development
  • Experience in systemic drug monitoring clinics

Specific skills

  • Multi disciplinary team working
  • Able to perform clinical skills in stressfull environment
  • Good dexterity to confidently handle surgical instruments
  • Design protocols for nurse led clinics
