Consultant Gastroenterologist (Upper GI & HPB) – Advanced Endoscopy
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The role is for a Consultant Gastroenterologist with a specialist interest in either Upper GI disease or Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) disease and advanced endoscopy.
The successful candidate will join a highly regarded team delivering secondary and tertiary Gastroenterology and Hepatology services across South West London. The department provides comprehensive inpatient, outpatient and endoscopy services, supported by specialist nurses, trainees and research staff.
The role offers the opportunity to develop either a specialist Upper GI and GI physiology practice, including transnasal endoscopy and pH monitoring, or a specialist HPB and advanced endoscopy practice, including ERCP and EUS within a tertiary HPB service.
Key responsibilities:
- Deliver specialist Gastroenterology services with a focus on either Upper GI disease and GI physiology or Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) disease and advanced endoscopy.
- Provide inpatient care as part of a shared Consultant rota.
- Run outpatient and specialist clinics, including two‑week‑wait cancer referrals.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy within a JAG‑accredited endoscopy unit and national training centre.
- For HPB specialists: undertake ERCP and EUS and contribute to regional HPB cancer pathways.
- For Upper GI specialists: support GI physiology and upper GI diagnostic services, including transnasal endoscopy and prolonged pH monitoring.
- Participate in benign and cancer multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Contribute to the Consultant‑led GI bleed rota and weekend inpatient reviews.
- Support teaching, supervision, audit, quality improvement and research.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to support service development and excellent patient care.
