Job Description

Peerpoint is A&O Shearman’s global platform for self‑directed consultant lawyers. The role involves undertaking assignments typically lasting six months or more within A&O Shearman practice groups or directly with clients, focusing on funds and asset management.

Examples of recent opportunities

  • Supporting the Alternatives business of an asset‑management firm, including the establishment and ongoing maintenance of alternative funds, reviewing and negotiating fund documents, and providing legal support on regulatory or strategic initiatives.
  • Fund‑formation lawyer supporting product delivery and management across the product pipeline for the global alternative products team within Asset Management for an investment bank, with prior experience in Luxembourg funds requested.
  • Working for the asset‑management arm of a bank, supporting portfolio management, feeder funds to large US hedge‑fund agreements, UCITS work, ESG, and a focus on alternative/unregulated funds.
  • Mid‑level funds lawyer supporting the UK legal team of a leading global investment manager, negotiating investment‑management agreements, fund formation and restructuring across UK & Cayman funds, occasional CDO work, and routine business‑as‑usual tasks such as processing redemptions, setting up new SPVs, and handling investor requests.
  • Focusing on the regulated UCITS platform at an FCA‑regulated financial services firm that provides web‑based portfolio management and outsourced services across investment‑management and trading functions.

Qualifications (Our criteria)

  • Minimum of two years’ post‑qualification experience at a top‑tier law firm specialising in funds or asset‑management work.
  • Recent in‑house legal experience at a leading financial services institution, alternative investment fund or asset manager (directly or as a secondee) is desirable.
  • Desire to take ownership of your career and be responsible for your own professional development and network.
  • Research on personal and financial factors related to commencing a career as a legal consultant and comfort with differences from permanent employment.
  • Commitment to building a positive and productive relationship with Peerpoint, with transparent, open, and responsive communication.
  • Consultant mindset, highly professional, flexible, and adaptable outlook and approach.
  • Ability to make effective transitions into new environments and motivation to deliver an excellent standard of service to each client.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to professionally deal with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Resilient, autonomous, and highly credible, with exemplary commercial and client‑service acumen.
  • Proven project‑management skills.
  • Practising certificate (or equivalent) entitlement to practise as a lawyer in the UK.
