We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated doctor to work with us in the Care of the Elderly Medicine department at Newham University Hospital for a period of 12 months, commencing August 2026. The successful candidate will work in a friendly and dynamic department, fully supported by consultants and specialist registrars.
The Care of the Elderly Department at Newham University Hospital is part of the Division of Medicine and provides acute Care of the Elderly and Stroke services. It has 3 Care of the Elderly wards – Thistle (AAU <24-72hr LOS), Silvertown (short stay 72hr LOS) – and a 13-bed acute stroke unit (Heather ward). The department manages medical patients located in the Emergency Department and the Clinical Decision Unit who are aged 75 and above, and those within our COE bed bases listed above.
The Care of the Elderly consultants and all COE juniors are part of the General Medical on-call system. IMT/ GPVTS doctors contribute to a full shift pattern for day, night and weekend shifts for medicine. A copy of the rota is provided.
Main duties of the job
The role involves managing patients in the Care of the Elderly wards and the acute stroke unit, delivering acute Care of the Elderly and Stroke services, and participating in the on-call system for day, night, and weekend shifts.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- MBBS
- Full MRCP, or MRCP including PACES
Knowledge
- Good basic general medical knowledge
- Experience at SHO level
Clinical Expertise in Specialty / Sub-Specialty
- Experience of working in the UK NHS
- Skilled at practical procedures e.g. arterial blood gases, catheterisation
- Previous Geriatric Medicine experience
Training Expected
- Completion of FY1
- SHO level experience
