Job Overview
Moorfields Eye Hospital invites applications for clinical fellowship posts for specialist training in the Vitreo‑Retinal Service. The role involves the management and follow‑up of patients with VR diseases presenting to the VR Service. Recruitment will begin in November 2026, with additional posts in late 2026 and 2027. The successful applicant must be registered with the General Medical Council, hold a licence to practice, and possess an FRCOphth/MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification. Candidates should be at Specialist Trainee grade or equivalent, near or completed in higher specialist training in Ophthalmology, and must demonstrate significant experience in VR surgery to work independently, supervise junior staff and run theatre lists.
Main responsibilities
- Participation in a 1‑in‑9 on‑call rota covering all aspects of Vitreo‑Retinal emergency work.
- Undertake clinic and elective surgery, possibly including outreach clinics or scheduled theatre.
- Supervise junior medical staff in the VR Clinic and VR Emergency Clinic and contribute to both formal and informal clinic teaching.
- Opportunity to undertake clinical research.
- Perform lasers for the VR Service.

Education / Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent.
- MRCOphth or equivalent.
- GMC Licence to Practice registration.
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree.
Experience
- Some surgical experience in VR surgery.
- Previous exposure to VR surgery.
