Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The paediatric critical care services at Leicester are located at Leicester Royal Infirmary. This includes a 12‑bedded cardiac paediatric intensive care unit (CPICU), 7‑bedded children’s intensive care unit (CICU) and 12‑bedded HDU/Paediatric respiratory long‑term ward (ward 12) which is located next to the children’s intensive care unit.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Senior role in General PICU, Cardiac PICU, and Comet transport, with supported on‑call duties.
- Participate in Cardiac MDT meetings and PICU grand rounds.
- Lead ward rounds during fellow weeks, working with the MDT.
- Collaborate with the outreach team and oversee patient flow.
ECMO Focus
- Work closely with the ECMO team, with protected time to attend paediatric and adult ECMO ward rounds.
- Access ECMO wet‑lab simulations and complete bedside preceptorship.
- Teach on the 4‑day ECMO course, held twice a year.
- Gain experience in ECMO transport, including intra‑ and inter‑hospital transfers.
- Involved in ECMO referral triaging and equipment familiarisation.
Research & Development
- Contribute to audit, QI and research projects.
- Funding to attend and present at the ELSO conference.

Qualifications
- MB BS or Equivalent
- Full GMC Registration
- MRCPCH Equivalent
- Current APLS/NLS certification
Experience
- At least 1 year experience in paediatric intensive care medicine at ST6+ level or equivalent
- Appropriate clinical knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems; clear, logical thinking/analytical approach; understands evidence based practice
- Airway skills, ability to perform ultrasound guided lines. Lead resuscitation for children of all ages

- Previous ECMO centre experience
