Trust Doctor – Rapid Access/Minimally Invasive Benign Gynaecology ST3+

This post offers the appointee broad and in-depth experience across obstetrics and gynaecology, with particular emphasis on surgical training. There will be opportunities to gain hands‑on experience in minimal access and open benign gynaecological procedures, including operative laparoscopy, laparoscopic hysterectomy, abdominal hysterectomy and surgery for endometriosis. In addition, the post provides significant exposure to the Urgent Suspected Cancer (USC) service, ensuring comprehensive training in the management of patients referred via this pathway.

Main duties of the job

This post will provide the appointee with extensive experience in the Urgent Suspected Cancer (USC) service. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the appointee will gain the skills and confidence required to eventually manage their own USC clinic.

There will also be opportunities to train in other ambulatory services, including outpatient hysteroscopy and early pregnancy scanning. Support will be available to complete the Benign Gynaecology SITM.

In addition, sessions in day surgery and main theatres are included to further develop and consolidate benign gynaecological surgical skills.

Job responsibilities

This fixed‑term post offers comprehensive training in obstetrics and gynaecology, with excellent opportunities to gain experience in minimal access and open benign gynaecological surgery, including operative laparoscopy, laparoscopic and abdominal hysterectomy, and endometriosis surgery. The post also provides extensive exposure to the Urgent Suspected Cancer (USC) service.

This role is ideal for doctors wishing to develop advanced laparoscopic skills, complete the RCOG Benign or Acute Gynaecology SITMs, pursue CESR, or enhance surgical experience via OOPE.

The appointee will participate in the obstetric on‑call rota (1 in 9) in Royal Sussex County Hospital and work across our maternity services, gaining experience in high‑risk and preterm obstetrics. Opportunities also exist for research and audit.

The department is a recognised Gynaecological Oncology Centre, an accredited Endometriosis Centre, and hosts a subspecialist Urogynaecology service, providing a broad and stimulating clinical experience.

Person Specification

Experience / Qualifications

  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
  • Higher Degree

  • Clinical skills expected of an ST3+ level doctor
  • Evidence of having undertaken own development to improve understanding of equalities issues
  • Breadth of experience in and outside specialty
