Role Overview

British American Tobacco UK is hiring a Junior Toxicologist in Southampton. This role is part of the Toxicology team responsible for the delivery of toxicological ingredient, material and product evaluations in accordance with guidelines from the Product Stewardship Council (PSC), the R&D Policy Framework, corporate positions and relevant legislation. The Junior Toxicologist will play an integral role in delivering innovations to market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recommend and guide project teams on the toxicology evaluations, tests and design needed to build data packages for individual product launches.
  • Author, review and sign off risk assessments as part of the toxicological evaluation of new ingredients, technologies and materials.
  • Articulate and drive programme areas or tools to harmonise approaches between categories and streamline the assessment of different ingredient types (e.g., Naturals, Skin Sensitizers).
  • Apply appropriate solutions or approaches to identify and resolve problems based on an understanding and experience of biology, toxicology, or chemistry.
  • Work closely with product development teams as a knowledgeable partner, providing feedback at all stages of projects to set direction.
  • Maintain and build effective working relationships with internal stakeholders, suppliers, and designated contacts within BAT.
  • Adhere to the financial process and controls where applicable.

Required Experience

  • Relevant science background equivalent to a degree level qualification, preferably with a good understanding of the principles of toxicology. Demonstrated technical background in toxicology test packages, particularly ingredient and product risk assessment.
  • Awareness of technical developments in toxicology & regulations (tobacco & consumer goods) desirable.
  • Positive “can do” and one‑team mindset by sharing knowledge, supporting colleagues, and contributing to joint problem‑solving.
  • Proven attention to detail and accuracy in work to enable the delivery of thorough and robust work.
  • Collaborative ways of working with internal and cross‑functional partners to deliver business needs.
  • Proficient computing skills to facilitate use of in‑house databases and skilled users of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Good communication, organisational, and planning skills, and ability to work both as a team member and independently.
  • A drive to succeed, committed to continuous learning and growth and flexibility in adapting to new tasks and changing priorities.

Education & Professional Qualifications

  • Relevant science background equivalent to a degree level qualification, preferably in a biology or chemistry discipline, with good understanding of the principles of toxicology.
  • MSc or equivalent experience in toxicology (or another relevant subject).
