About the role: Data Engineer/ £48,000/ Bristol/ Hybrid Working

Milestones Trust is embarking on a major transformation of its data and analytics capabilities, and we are seeking a skilled Data Engineer to play a central role in building our new modern Data & AI Platform. Working alongside the Head of Data & Analytics, you will design, develop and maintain high quality, secure data pipelines that enable trusted reporting, insight and future AI/ML capabilities across the organisation. This is a rare opportunity to shape a data platform from the ground up, with direct influence over architecture, standards, automation and security in a co-managed delivery model.

As our Data Engineer, you will own the development of end-to-end pipelines across bronze, silver and gold layers, implement robust governance and security controls, and ensure data is modelled, optimised and ready for operational and strategic use. You will work with structured and semi structured data from key systems—including HRIS, digital care planning, finance, medication, estates and incident systems—building reusable patterns, semantic models and certified datasets that unlock meaningful, joined up insight for teams across the Trust. You will also help embed best practice engineering, including CI/CD, monitoring, anonymisation, quality rules, lineage, metadata, and cost-efficient cloud operation.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex data challenges, working collaboratively and building high quality, scalable engineering solutions that make a meaningful impact. You will contribute to a culture of trust, security and continuous improvement, helping staff develop confidence in data and enabling the delivery of safe, person-centred care. If you are proactive, technically skilled and motivated by delivering real value in a nonprofit environment, we would love to hear from you.’

Technical Specification:

  • Cloud or data platform certifications (e.g. Azure, Fabric, Databricks,)
  • Experience operating modern data platforms in the cloud
  • Experience managing or integrating third‑party data feeds
  • Exposure to DevOps or platform‑engineering
  • Strong SQL for data transformation, modelling and optimisation.
  • Experience with at least one programming language used in data engineering (e.g. python)
  • Data modelling skills (dimensional, star schema, analytics optimised models)
  • Building and maintaining production-grade data pipelines.
  • Understanding of ETL/ELT orchestration and scheduling.
  • Working with cloud-based data platforms and storage.
  • Experience with version control (e.g. Git)
  • CI/CD concepts for data pipelines.
  • Environment separation (Dev/Test/Prod).
  • Writing maintainable, testable, well documented code.
  • Demonstrable ability to apply GDPR and data protection principles in practice within a data engineering context, including privacy‑by‑design, data minimisation, retention, anonymisation and pseudonymisation when designing, building and operating data pipelines and analytical datasets.

Here at Milestones Trust, we recognise that without the hard work, commitment and passion of our staff, we wouldn’t be the charity we are today. That’s why we are committed to rewarding you with a competitive pay and benefits package including:

  • 34 days’ annual leave, including recognised public holidays
  • Learning and development to support your career growth
  • Nationally recognised qualifications, from entry‑level care to management
