Key Responsibilities
To support the effective maintenance, management and protection of all Council‑owned tree stock and assist in providing professional arboricultural advice across the Vale of Glamorgan.
Working with the Arboricultural Manager – Neighbourhood Services – you will help deliver arboricultural services across highways, parks, woodlands and other Council land. The role includes undertaking technical tree inspections, supporting programmed works, assisting with contract management and ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with legislation and best practice.
You will respond to service requests, enquiries, complaints and incidents, providing clear technical advice and supporting information; prepare quotations and estimates; maintain accurate records and support the monitoring of external contractors.
In line with the Vale of Glamorgan Tree Strategy, you will contribute to protecting existing trees, supporting sustainable planting and succession planning, and improving tree health and resilience to climate change, pests and disease.
You will work closely with colleagues, contractors and the public, balancing safety, environmental value and community needs.
Key Qualifications
- Practical experience in arboriculture, including managing works, programming, contract management and procurement of services.
- Sound technical expertise in tree biology, risk management, maintenance, and knowledge of current biological threats to trees (pests, diseases, climate impacts).
- Full competence with relevant legislation and guidance (Highways, Wildlife, Planning, Tree Protection, local and national guidance) and UK British Standards (BS 3998, BS 5837, BS 8545).
- Strong communication skills – able to communicate with staff, customers and the public, present information to stakeholders and act professionally.
- IT literacy with current technology used in arboriculture, including tree‑management software and diagnostic equipment, and ability to maintain accurate records and data.
- Highly motivated, flexible, responsive, integrity‑driven.
Remuneration and Working Conditions
Salary: £32,597 – £36,363 per annum.
Working pattern: Monday to Friday, 37 hours per week.
Main place of work: Alps Depot, with hybrid working including site and home.
Location: Vale of Glamorgan.
