Clinical Duties
- Assist Nurses, Therapists and other team members in the rehabilitation of patients using delegated treatment techniques and follow nursing and therapy care plans.
- Work independently with routine, delegated tasks while following established good practice and refer non‑routine tasks appropriately. Work is supervised and evaluated on a routine basis.
- Undertake specifically delegated initial patient interviews and functional screening to assess, measure and teach safe use of aids and appliances such as walking aids.
- Follow treatment plans as prescribed by nurses, physiotherapists and therapists; identify activities that meet treatment goals.
- Encourage individuals to maintain optimum independence by carrying out therapeutic activity with empathy, sensitivity and good interpersonal skills.
- Manage the reablement of patients as delegated by physiotherapists and occupational therapists, and report progress or adverse reactions appropriately.
- Be responsible for the selection, fitting, adjusting and checking of equipment following prescriptions from occupational therapists or physiotherapists.
- Communicate with patients and/or carers to provide reassurance and promote understanding.
- Assist in collecting information from patients or relatives as requested by trained staff.
- Use verbal and non‑verbal communication tools to gain informed consent, especially where barriers such as hearing loss or dysphasia may exist.
- Assess capacity, gain valid consent and work within a legal framework with patients lacking consent to treatment.
- Prioritise tasks allocated and adjust as necessary.
- Ensure documentation is completed in accordance with Trust and departmental requirements.
- Maintain housekeeping and stock control on the unit.
- Be competent in phlebotomy and simple dressings.
- Participate in additional tasks such as swallowing assessments, foot screening and nutritional reviews, and refer appropriately to specialities.
Professional Development
- Attend any in‑service training programmes and participate in the individual appraisal and performance review programme.
- Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) by keeping up to date with developments and incorporating them into work as necessary.
- Respect the individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity of patients.
- Exercise good time management, punctuality and consistent, reliable attendance.
- Assist JHRU staff in the induction and training of new staff.
Planning and Organisational Duties
- Be aware of health and safety aspects of your work; implement policies that improve safety and record accidents promptly.
- Maintain accurate, comprehensive and up‑to‑date documentation in line with legal and departmental requirements.
- Comply with organisational and departmental policies and procedures.
- Undertake departmental administrative duties as required.
- Perform any other duties considered appropriate by the relevant registered nurse/Team Leader or Community Therapy Services Lead.
Communication and Key Working Relationships
- Report back to nursing and therapy staff on all treatment activities, either verbally or in writing as requested.
- Work as a member of the team and communicate relevant information to colleagues.
- Communicate effectively in a variety of ways with patients and carers to gain cooperation and understanding of treatment programmes.
- Maintain good working relationships and establish therapeutic relationships using negotiation and reasoning skills.
Financial Responsibilities
- Identify deficits in resources needed for the job and bring them to the attention of the Team Leader.
- Monitor materials and equipment; report defects or deficits to the Team Leader and adhere to financial policies.
Human Resources Responsibilities
- Attend regular meetings such as staff meetings, support and development groups.
- Participate in in‑service training.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Fulfil a proactive role in managing risk, including risk assessment, taking appropriate action and reporting incidents, near‑misses and hazards.
- Adhere to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and ensure personal and others’ safety during all activities.
Teaching and Induction
- Assist JHRU staff in the induction and training of new staff.

Work Circumstances & On‑call
37.5 hours per week over 7 days. Shift patterns to be agreed on appointment.
