Overview

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
GENERAL
- Duties and responsibilities will be in accordance with Manual Worker Grade 5 as described in the NJC book for Local Authorities Services (Manual Workers
1. DRIVING DUTIES
- To drive any Refuse Collection or associated vehicles safely, in accordance with prescribed standards.
- To report any difficulties in manoeuvring the vehicle on round to the Waste Management Supervisor.
- To report any vehicle collisions involving the drivers “vehicle promptly on the appropriate form.
2. MANAGERIAL AND SUPERVISORY DUTIES
- To supervise Refuse Collectors and temporary agency employees working on refuse rounds and other associated operations, ensuring efficiency and safety of operation.
3. VEHICLE CARE
- To undertake daily vehicle checks covering the main parts of the chassis, body, hopper and bin lift.
- To complete and return a daily vehicle check form.
- To bring to the immediate attention of the Workshop Manager any items requiring urgent maintenance.
- To check oil and water levels and make visual tyre inspections daily, taking appropriate action to maintain prescribed operational standards.
- To maintain the vehicle, including the inside of the cab and all external surfaces, in a clean and hygienic condition. This will involve the Driver cleaning the vehicle with the high-pressure steam cleaner at least weekly.
4. PLANT AND EQUIPMENT
- To ensure that all plant and equipment is used and maintained safely, efficiently and in accordance with manufacturers instructions.
5. DAILY OPERATIONS
- To generally assist the crew in loading, transporting and disposing of refuse.
6. HEALTH AND SAFETY
- To ensure that all operations are undertaken in accordance with the departments safety manual issued to all members of the crew.
- To ensure that a copy of the safety manual is available in the cab at all times.
- To ensure that all accidents and/or dangerous occurrences are reported immediately on the appropriate form.
- To observe specific Health and Safety instructions when visiting other establishments, for example incinerators, land fill sites, transfer stations etc.
- To ensure that the Driver and Collectors wear Hi-Vis reflective waistcoats when working on the highway.
7. CUSTOMER CARE
- To undertake all duties in a manner consistent with the Council’s Customer Care Policy.
8. CORPORATE CLOTHING
- To wear selected items of the issued protective clothing at all times.
- To ensure that the Council’s Corporate Image is maintained.
- To ensure that all employees designated to the round wear the issued protective clothing.
9. TRAINING
- To co-operate and fully participate in training programmes undertaken within the department, including “Responsible Person” First Aid Training.
- 10. Ensure all work complies with standing orders, financial regulations and departmental instructions.
- 11. Comply with policies relating to equalities and environmental issues.
- 12. Adhere to health and safety regulations.
- 13. Participate in the induction training of new employees and trainees allocated to the section.
- 14. Participate in the introduction and development of new systems and procedures including those based on IT.
- 15. Participate in the Achievement and Development Scheme.
