Job Description:

Job Summary

These are replacement posts within the Academy of the Great Western Hospital focused on Undergraduate Medical Education. They are available to post‑foundation year doctors and are designed as a 12‑month fellowship, generally taken before specialty training. The roles combine an 80% educational component delivered in the Academy with a 20% supernumerary clinical component in the Trust (or 50/50 variants as described below).

Main Duties

  • Work with the Academy Undergraduate Manager and administrators to organize formal teaching sessions and clinical placements for undergraduate units, ensuring sessions are appropriately timetabled and delivered.
  • Maintain regular communication with Undergraduate Coordinators and other Clinical Teaching Fellows, meeting throughout the year to review courses and plan future activities. Each Fellow will use an individual or group Outlook calendar.
  • Office‑based Fellows work 40 hours per week (09:00‑17:00), with one day allocated to a clinical specialty. Ward‑based Fellows may rotate 6–12 months between clinical duty and Academy work, with possible weekend inclusion.
  • Adjust workload to reflect fluctuating student presence and academic activity throughout the year.

Educational Component

  • Office‑based Fellows spend approximately 80% of their time in the Academy, responsible for student choice projects and field‑trips, according to their interests.

Clinical Component

  • Office‑based Fellows spend 20% of their time (up to two sessions per week) working clinically as a supernumerary on daytime hours (band 1A). Out‑of‑hours or on‑call participation can be negotiated and is compensated separately; it must not affect the educational component.
  • Ward‑based Fellows (WB‑CTF CCU/ED, ED/Acute Care, Acute Medicine, or other specialties) spend 50% of their time clinically and 50% in the Academy. Clinical rotations typically involve 6 months in one department and 6 months in another, with the possibility to remain in a single specialty if already in training. Clinical duties may include out‑of‑hours or on‑call, under the same terms.
  • Clinical teaching fellows may, under exceptional circumstances, be re‑allocated to other clinical areas as directed by the Medical Director or Trust Executive Board.

Qualifications

  • MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent medical degree.
  • Completed Foundation Training (Years 1 & 2) within the NHS (proof required).
  • Management or administration experience.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Curriculum knowledge.
  • Commitment to innovation.
  • Commitment to colleague and medical student wellbeing.

Supporting Requirements

  • Disclosure and Barring Service check required (Rehabilitation of Offenders Act exceptions).
  • Current UK professional registration.
