Job Description

Working in the UK Import Service Team, based at our Bradford logistics centre, you will be responsible for the administration and management of import clearances for shipments arriving into the UK from our European Road Freight network. The Import Service Team coordinates all aspects of customs clearance and the recovery of taxes paid, liaising with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

The role also extends to post‑clearance activities, as well as invoicing associated with customs clearance. The team forms part of a wider business area that is also responsible for brokerage activities and Smart Border clearances into the EU; cross‑over with roles within the wider department can be expected where appropriate.

Main Duties

  • Collating and verification of customs clearance instructions.
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to enable the smooth flow of shipments within our network.
  • Contacting UK importing companies via email or phone call to obtain data required for UK import clearance.
  • Processing of inbound movements and the associated clearance instructions.
  • Verification of customs authority and maintenance of records of customs authorities granted to us.
  • Issuing invoices and contacting associated parties to ensure the recovery of customs debt and prompt payment of invoices.
  • Controlling the release of shipments pending payment and reviewing customs documents to ensure correct clearances and debts are incurred.
  • Responding to invoice queries from external stakeholders via telephone and email.
  • Updating and maintaining internal databases and passing required details to the Customs division via an IT ticket system.
  • Performing administration tasks associated with customs procedures and tax recovery.
  • Periodically, you will be required to cross‑train and cover the tasks of other team members to ensure a smooth workflow.

Skills and Attributes

  • Customer service, call centre, or administration experience preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and good organisational skills.
  • Ability to handle customer queries speedily and efficiently.
  • Comfortable using the standard Microsoft package.
  • Knowledge of the freight industry/customs procedures beneficial but not essential.
  • European foreign language skills beneficial but not essential.
  • Ability to build and maintain rapport with external stakeholders including customers and 3rd party agents.
