Applying for your first prison officer role and happy to relocate? Get your career off to a great start, gaining valuable experience working at HMP Onley for 23 months before returning to HMP Risley permanently.
We are recruiting for both current needs and future vacancies at HMP Risley. The special futures scheme guarantees a permanent role at HMP Risley once you have completed the initial 23 months at HMP Onley.

Key responsibilities
In this unique career you will play several roles in a single day. You will act as:
- A peace‑keeper, ensuring safety and order.
- A counsellor, supporting prisoners’ personal development.
- A teacher, delivering educational programmes.
Direct engagement with prisoners in a challenging environment, helping to protect the public and make a positive impact.

Requirements
- Minimum 18 years of age at commencement of employment.
- Meet Civil Service nationality requirements.
- Pass medical and fitness assessment.
- Meet required eyesight standard in both eyes.
- Meet suitable hearing standard for safety.
- Tattoos may be permitted if not offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating; facial tattoos are generally not acceptable unless for cultural, religious or medical reasons.
Pay and Working Hours
Starting salary: £33,746 at HMP Onley.
After the initial 23‑month period, pay will adjust to match the salary at the prison where you transfer.
Initial training: 37 hours a week. Post‑training, you may work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week, with salary reflecting weekly hours.

Application Process
The online application collects basic details and invites you to complete stage 1 tests to assess basic judgement and numerical skills. Successful candidates are invited to stage 2 values‑based assessment, followed by an online assessment centre (OAC).
