A fantastic opportunity is now available for a temporary Digital Project Archivist to join the friendly team at Bristol Archives (Bristol City Council). The role is based at B Bond Warehouse on the harbourside, with views across to Avon Gorge and the Suspension Bridge.
This two‑year appointment is kindly funded by the National Archives – New Burdens 20 Year Rule Programme and the Archives Revealed Programme, a partnership between the National Archives, the Pilgrim Trust, the Wolfson Foundation and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
What’s the role?
You’ll support Bristol Archives in delivering an outstanding Archives Service by developing, managing and providing access to digital archives and digitised assets. You will initially report to the City Archivist and, once recruitment is complete, to the new Senior Archivist (Collections). You will work closely with the three permanent Archivists, the Senior Archivist (Access & Engagement), and colleagues in the searchroom, modern records and museum departments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assess current digital provision and undertake a Digital Asset Register.
- Design a Digital Asset Management plan and test workflows with council colleagues and external depositors.
- Support senior staff in refreshing digital strategy, policy and building a business case for upscaled digital preservation infrastructure and storage.
- Represent Bristol Archives at SWigiPres, the Southwest Digital Preservation community of practice.
- Support the National Heritage Lottery Funded “Sounds of the Southwest” audio heritage digitisation project.
What are we looking for?
We expect the successful candidate to:
- Hold a postgraduate qualification in archive administration or a related field.
- Have up‑to‑date knowledge of current issues in archives, records management and digital preservation, including best practice and experience with preserving and providing access to digital material.
- Demonstrate experience delivering a customer‑focused service in a busy work environment.
- Be proficient with specialist archive management and digital preservation software, and have used off‑shelf or in‑house digital preservation solutions.
- Have experience working in a multi‑disciplinary team and be able to thrive in a fast‑moving setting.
- Preferably have prior experience in local government or records management, and hold interests in digital and environmental sustainability.
