Job Overview

Two receptionist positions within the Ophthalmology area, Grade Band 2, permanent contract. Working Monday to Friday only, full‑time 37.5 hours per week. Salary £25,272 pa pro rata.

Main Duties

  • Act as the first point of contact for patients, visitors, and the multi‑professional team, providing a courteous, efficient and professional service.
  • Welcoming patients and families/carers; manage check‑in, maintain patient records and assist with the self‑check‑in kiosk.
  • Handle all telephone enquiries, direct callers appropriately, and provide initial assistance to routine callers.
  • Enter patient data into PAS, print patient front sheets, labels, and organise notes methodically.
  • Process patient notes for coding/scanning, ensuring timely activity recording in the computer system.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing post, ensuring distribution as required.
  • Complete daily cash up of clinics and support financial records.
  • Work off‑site at the Bristol diagnostic hub as per rota.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience

  • Previous customer service experience.
  • Clerical/administration experience including filing and/or reception.
  • Prior NHS experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent professional telephone and reception manner.
  • Flexible approach to duties and ability to adjust to change.
  • Capability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and maintain accuracy.
  • Clear communication and ability to act quickly in emergencies.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Tidy and methodical working practice.
  • Teamwork and motivation for others; ability to work independently.
  • Confidence to handle difficult conversations with patients, relatives and carers.
  • Previous NHS experience.

Qualifications and Training

  • GCSE in English Language and Maths, grade C or above (or equivalent).
  • IT literacy, including basic Microsoft Office.
