Job Overview
We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Learning Support SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist Cognition and Learning Unit within a mainstream primary school. As a Learning Support SEN Teaching Assistant you will support pupils with cognition and learning needs through personalised learning, SEN support, classroom support, targeted interventions, behaviour support and pastoral care.
Duties
- Learning Support: Support pupils with cognition and learning needs within the specialist Unit and during planned integration into mainstream classes
- Personalised Activities: Deliver specified work, interventions and learning activities to individuals and small groups under agreed supervision
- Adapted Resources: Adapt classroom tasks, instructions, visual aids and teaching resources to meet pupils’ individual learning needs
- Progress Monitoring: Observe, record and provide feedback on pupil progress, attainment, behaviour and engagement
- Communication Support: Encourage pupils’ speech, language, communication, confidence, independence and social interaction
- Pastoral Care: Support pupils’ social and emotional wellbeing, personal care, hygiene, eating, dressing and welfare needs where required
- Professional Collaboration: Work closely with teachers, the SENCO, therapists, families, carers and external professionals
- H3 Duties: Implement planned learning activities, support therapy or care programmes and assist with resources, records, ICT, break-time supervision and educational visits
- H4 / HLTA Duties: Plan, organise and adjust work plans, deliver targeted learning, assess and report progress, provide specialist support and cover classes for short periods such as meetings and PPA
- Behaviour Support: Promote positive behaviour and intervene appropriately to support pupils with complex or challenging needs
Candidate Requirements
Essential
- SEN Support: Experience supporting children or young people with special educational needs, learning difficulties or additional support needs
- Inclusive Approach: Patient, nurturing and flexible approach with a commitment to inclusive education and pupil wellbeing
- Communication Skills: Strong communication skills with the ability to work with pupils, staff, families, carers and external professionals
- Teamwork: Able to work as part of a professional team under the direction of the Lead Teacher
- Safeguarding Awareness: Knowledge of child protection, confidentiality, health and safety and safe working practices
- Personal Care: Willingness to support pupils with personal, social, welfare and health needs where required
Desirable
- H3 Qualification: Working at or towards Level 2, NVQ, Certificate or equivalent in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or willingness to train
- H4 / HLTA Qualification: Knowledge at NVQ Level 3 plus additional specialist knowledge, or working towards professional HLTA standards
- Specialist Knowledge: Understanding of cognition and learning needs, complex additional needs and SEND strategies
- Intervention Skills: Experience delivering targeted interventions, personalised learning activities or therapy-based programmes
- Specialist Training: Knowledge of approaches such as ELKLAN, SCERTS or TEACCH would be beneficial
- Supervisory Skills: Ability to support, guide or supervise other classroom support staff would be useful for the H4 / HLTA role
