The Band 7 Outpatient Manager is responsible for coordinating and supporting the nursing and operational delivery of services at Hawthorne House. Working in partnership with operational teams, clinicians, nurses and administrative staff, the post holder will ensure that services run efficiently, safely and deliver a high‑quality patient experience.

Hawthorne House provides specialist HIV, Sexual Health, Infectious Diseases, and Immunology & Allergy services. The post holder will play a pivotal role in:

  • Promoting a kind and supportive environment for patients and staff
  • Ensuring services remain connected, with effective communication and coordination across all disciplines
  • Taking a bold approach to problem‑solving, service improvement and operational and nursing challenges

This role is integral to maintaining patient safety, improving patient flow, and delivering a seamless and positive patient journey in our outpatient area and being a senior manager for the nursing team in Hawthorne House.

Working pattern

Full‑time role: 37.5 hours per week – Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM (30‑minute unpaid lunch break). Core service hours: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with extended opening until 8:00 PM on Wednesdays; bank holidays off; option to work compressed hours over 4 days per week (e.g., 7:00 AM to 5:15 PM).

Main duties of the job

  • Registered Adult Nurse on NMC register
  • Evidence of leadership training
  • Demonstrate an ability, experience, passion in the following areas: team building, time management, leadership, etc.
  • Lead and coordinate nursing and operational delivery at Hawthorne House, ensuring safe, efficient, high‑quality, patient‑centred services across HIV, Sexual Health, Infectious Diseases, and Immunology & Allergy

Qualifications

  • Registered Adult Nurse on NMC register

Experience

  • Professional portfolio demonstrating continuing professional development and evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
  • Substantial relevant and recent clinical experience within a complex healthcare setting or acute NHS setting working as a deputy Manager Band 6, including the supervision and education of junior staff/students
  • Demonstrated understanding of practice‑based supervision / assessment as detailed in the NMC standards for student supervision and assessment
  • Demonstrable current, recent experience of team leadership and management within the healthcare setting
  • Demonstrable understanding of the management responsibility for pay and non‑pay resources associated with the clinical service
  • Evidence of effective multi‑professional working
  • Experience of being a mentor
  • Demonstration of a significant contribution to innovative practice or change management
  • Experience in interviewing and selection of staff
  • Experience in learning from incidents/complaints and supporting changes in practice
  • Leadership, team building, managing resources, time management, clinical governance, audit and research, workforce planning / management, NHS policy and political awareness, knowledge of clinical governance (sub‑criteria)
