Overview

Lead Divisional Pharmacist – Cancer Services at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Responsible for all aspects of clinical pharmacy services to haematology, oncology and all cancer services, including prescribing and administration of chemotherapy, intrathecal chemotherapy, and the supply of clinical trial materials. The post holder will lead by example in these specialisms, manage senior pharmacists, rotational pharmacists, and trainee pharmacists, and work closely with the multidisciplinary team across both Chelsea and West Middlesex sites. Some weekend shifts may be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide pharmacy input to oncology, haematology and palliative care teams and other users of technical services products.
  • Supply clinical trial materials and chemotherapy.
  • Deliver pharmaceutical care to inpatients and day‑case patients, optimising medicines use through safe prescribing and effective monitoring.
  • Cover wards with in‑patient haematology/oncology patients.
  • Monitor, evaluate and develop clinical pharmacy services for haematology patients in accordance with agreed objectives.
  • Train and develop staff within the team, including rotational and trainee pharmacists.
  • Lead clinical pharmacy services for patients admitted to oncology, haematology and palliative care specialist teams in collaboration with the Chief Pharmacist and Head of Pharmacy.
  • Identify and promote best practice, ensuring delivery of the clinical governance agenda to minimise drug‑related incidents.
  • Motivate and inspire staff to create a productive working environment and facilitate staff retention.
  • Proactively develop clinical pharmacy services in line with local and national objectives.
  • Demonstrate innovation in the highly specialised field of oncology/haematology pharmacy practice.
  • Act as the BOPA lead for the Chelsea site and ensure that all pharmacists in Cancer services have their BOPA passports.
  • Reconcile national and network priorities with local realities, including implementation of NICE guidance within the current capacity of the unit.
  • Establish processes for setting standards of care, identify and manage changes required to achieve these, and manage associated risks.
  • Delegate authority appropriately and manage pre‑registration, resident, specialist and other staff.
  • Monitor and evaluate clinical pharmacy services and conduct audits, including participation in regional and local QA audits.
  • Plan, manage and review therapeutic programmes, chemotherapy protocols and therapeutic guidelines.
  • Serve as a clinical role model and provide expert clinical knowledge and decision making.
  • Ensure health and safety standards within the Technical Services Unit.

Person Specification

Education and Qualification

  • Vocational Masters degree in Pharmacy + 1 year pre‑registration training
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy Practice
  • Specific Training in Oncology / Haematology
  • GPhC registration
  • RPS Membership
  • Clinical practice in either oncology or haematology patients
  • Holds Full BOPA Passport

Experience

  • Advanced clinical pharmacist practitioner with a high level of competency (equivalent to achieving ‘excellence’ in the majority of competencies in all clusters within the Advanced Level Competency Framework)
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a clinical pharmacist practitioner
  • Variety of clinical practice including medicine and surgery as a specialist
  • Experience in management of staff
  • Clinical audit to improve practice
  • Delivering training and education at postgraduate level
  • Dispensing and monitoring clinical trials
  • Basic knowledge of working in an aseptic unit
  • Knowledge of using Cerner
  • Knowledge of using Chemocare

Skills and Knowledge

  • Influence senior pharmacy and medical staff, the multidisciplinary team and management
  • Identify and manage risks and implement risk‑management procedures
  • Advanced level of clinical reasoning and judgement, managing difficult and ambiguous problems
  • Delegate authority appropriately

Salary

£66,582 to £77,368 per annum incl. HCAS
