Application closing date: 17 June 2026

An exciting job opportunity has become available on the Neonatal Unit at Leighton Hospital. We are looking for an enthusiastic, driven and experienced Neonatal Nurse with a passion for education to join us as the lead for Neonatal Education and Development.

Our 15‑bed Level 2 Neonatal Unit has 3 Intensive Care cots, 4 High Dependency Cots and 8 Special Care Cots. We strive to provide excellent care for babies and families, and the training and education of staff is fundamental to the safe running and development of the ward.

As a team we uphold the Trust’s values and behaviours in all we do.

The education post is 33.75 hours per week at Band 7.

If you feel you would be an excellent addition to the senior nurse team and have what it takes to lead the education and development of the Neonatal Unit, we would welcome your application.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be qualified in the speciality and act as a specialist in education and practice development within Neonatal education. They will support senior team members—including the Ward Manager, Matron and senior leadership—to develop and deliver evidence‑based, patient‑focused care.

They will be a visible role model, maintaining up‑to‑date clinical knowledge and skills, demonstrating high standards of practice, and working with staff to support development and contribute to the review and update of neonatal policies and procedures. They must have experience of supervising staff and be able to address performance concerns.

The role requires autonomous practice, excellent organisational skills and responsibility for planning and organising their own workload.

Experience of change management is essential. They will identify and develop quality‑improvement initiatives, use continuous improvement methods, and identify staff training and education needs to improve practice on the unit.

Excellent computer skills are required for maintaining training records and compiling reports.

About us

The Neonatal Unit falls under the Women and Children’s division. We collaborate closely with paediatric and maternity services. At Leighton, we were the first unit in the North West to achieve both the NWNODN Family Integrated Care Accreditation and the BFI Stage 3 Neonatal Accreditation—a proud achievement.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will act as a specialist in education and practice development, supporting team leaders, managers, matrons and the head of nursing to develop and deliver high standards of patient‑focused, evidence‑based care. They will be a resource for clinical expertise and maintain clinical skills through regular one‑on‑one practice sessions.

They will lead the educational strategy, develop and deliver a coordinated, systematic approach to practice development, establish evidence in practice, and collaborate closely with maternity counterparts. They will promote practice and educational development at departmental level, optimising resources and ensuring the highest standards of patient care.

As a key member of the neonatal senior team, they will implement national, regional, corporate and local agendas, and ensure all staff work within professional boundaries set by the NMC. They will provide clinical and educational leadership, senior clinical and professional advice, and work with other managers and the Northwest Neonatal Operational Delivery Network to maximise the quality of neonatal care.
