About the Role

As an Apprentice Dental Nurse, you will work alongside experienced dental professionals, supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care. You will receive on-the-job training combined with structured learning to achieve your dental nursing qualification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting dentists during a variety of clinical procedures
  • Preparing and maintaining dental equipment and instruments
  • Ensuring high standards of cleanliness and infection control
  • Supporting and reassuring patients before, during, and after treatment

Job Summary

The post holder will learn and develop the skills and knowledge required to become a competent and confident dental nurse. Under the supervision of qualified dental nursing staff, they will be expected to take on a range of clinical and patient‑facing duties while studying towards a dental nursing qualification.

This is a developmental role where learning on the job is complemented by formal training. The apprentice will be supported throughout their journey and given opportunities to grow as a valued member of the dental team. Key performance indicators (KPIs) will be agreed and monitored through regular performance reviews to support successful completion of the apprenticeship and development into a qualified dental nurse.

Key Accountabilities

Clinical and Patient Support

Promote and maintain health and safety in the workplace, implement infection prevention and control practices, provide chairside support, deliver preventive care, communicate with patients and colleagues, assist in emergencies, and uphold confidentiality and professionalism.

Practice and Team Contribution

Participate in team meetings, audits, planning and service development; maintain a safe clinical environment; collaborate with colleagues; represent the practice professionally; adapt to different practice locations if required.

Learning and Development

Engage fully with the apprenticeship training programme, attend teaching sessions, complete assignments, and maintain training records.

Performance and KPIs

Participate in regular performance reviews covering training milestones, learning engagement, portfolio completion, teamwork and communication, infection control compliance, punctuality, and overall professional development.

Additional Responsibilities

Carry out reasonable duties as requested by the Management Team and support general practice duties as experience allows.

Qualifications

  • Aged 16 years or older
  • Minimum GCSE grade C or equivalent in Maths and English

Experience

  • Experience of working with the general public in a professional and respectful manner
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal and non‑verbal)

Knowledge and Skills

  • Self‑directed learning and completion of assignments within deadlines
  • Knowledge of confidentiality, GDPR and NHS guidelines
  • Familiarity with Infection Prevention and Control policies
