Data Centre Technician
Purpose of the job
- Deliver service support within site team at client’s data centre/s.
- Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance, ad‑hoc and reactive tasks, escort and control sub‑contractors to all M&E services.
- Take a pro‑active role in identifying any issues that need to be escalated to the M&E manager.
- Escalate any site emergencies following agreed procedures.
- May require small installation works, repairs to building fabric, and handyman duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Resolve and complete day‑to‑day work orders to meet customer satisfaction targets and deliver within the SLA requirements.
- Maintain up‑to‑date logs of work completed and outstanding items through Mainstream SI‑7 CMMS system.
- Qualify and act as an appointed Authorised Person (AP) within 6 months from onboarding.
- Carry out isolations and re‑instatement of electrical, gas, fire alarms and sprinkler systems when required and where authorised.
- Issue permits for access, maintenance, service and project activities on location as required.
- Ensure all contractors and CBRE staff comply with CBRE and Client safety and security requirements.
- Participate in the critical services training programme.
- Maintain effective communication with the client and management team at all times.
- Operate as a team with other technicians, sharing expertise to resolve operational problems.
- Provide holiday, training and sickness cover for other members of the shift team.
- Track and complete critical services planned preventive maintenance; maintain and report on critical services and environmental monitoring.
- Provide condition assessments of plant and equipment.
- Log and action all out‑of‑line situations with incident reports, including remedial action taken.
- Update reports, documentation and infrastructure mapping as required.
- Ensure all contractors and CBRE staff comply with statutory, CBRE/Client safety and security requirements.
- Ensure quality of work performed by 3rd‑party specialist contractors and implement any report recommendations.
- Ensure there is follow‑through between normal technical tasks and additional/project works.
- Assist in preparing quotations for extra technical works; source supplies, materials and labour to carry out work cost‑effectively and efficiently.
- Ensure all requirements are met within client SLA and DOU, and adhere to standard CBRE/Client processes.
Personal Experience / Qualifications / Skills
- Trained in a technical discipline, having served an apprenticeship or equivalent (City & Guilds / NVQ level 3 or equivalent in BS7671:2008, IEE Wiring Regulation 18th Edition).
- Previous experience working within a critical maintenance environment.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Good customer service and communication skills.
- Flexible approach to work; a good team worker.
- Willing to learn and develop own skills.
- Good understanding of permit‑to‑work systems and H&S requirements.
- Ability to participate in mixed‑skill teams to meet targets and standards.
- Ability to understand technical drawings.
- Understanding of power provisioning, PDUs and environmental monitoring.
- Basic PC literacy; ability to interrogate database systems desirable. Training will be provided on all site‑based systems.
Accountabilities
- Accountable to Contract Manager and Site Supervisor.
- The post holder does not have any directly reporting staff.
- This post carries no direct budgetary responsibility.
- Accountable for maintaining appropriate stocks of spares and consumables, ensuring secure storage and controlled issue.
PERSONAL SPECIFICATION
Education
A good basic education is essential, with good written and spoken English and basic mathematics skills.
Training
The engineer must be formally trained in mechanical and electrical services maintenance. City & Guilds 236 parts 1 & 2 (or later) 17th Edition or equivalent qualification. Up‑to‑date skills on building management systems, ACOP’s, fire and environmental control, building control and health and safety. Formal health and safety training such as IOSH.
Experience
Experience of mission‑critical facilities maintenance, including UPS systems, BMS operation, emergency standby generators and electrical system testing. Comprehensive mechanical and electrical engineering experience undertaking reactive and planned preventive maintenance. Sound understanding of health and safety obligations with regard to maintenance activities. Appointed HV/AP with ability to create switching plans.

- Good computer skills – ability to use Excel, Word and Outlook, and to log PPMs, work reports and incidences on the client’s system.
