Overview

Lead Mechanical Engineer – GE Vernova Rugby site. The role focuses on the structural and mechanical design of large rotating electrical machines, applying finite element analysis (FEA) and prototype testing to ensure reliability in demanding operating environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical machine design – specify, design, and engineer mechanical aspects of large rotating electrical machines.
  • Interpret and resolve contractual and technical requirements, delivering quality‑focused solutions and design documentation.
  • Drive structural analysis and simulation using ANSYS/Workbench for mechanical stress, fatigue and structural integrity across machine designs and operating conditions.
  • Lead design model and prototype test programmes to characterise and improve noise and vibration behaviour; investigate new materials and manufacturing methods to enhance performance and reliability.
  • Collaborate with customers, electrical engineers, project management, sourcing, procurement, manufacturing and quality teams to understand requirements and deliver effective mechanical design solutions.
  • Apply and develop industry standards and engineering design processes; identify opportunities to advance mechanical engineering tools, methods and practices across the team.

Qualifications – Required

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Significant experience in rotating electrical machine engineering, including structural design, analysis and development.
  • Proven expertise in 2D and/or 3D finite element analysis (FEA) for mechanical designs (stress and fatigue analysis) using ANSYS/Workbench.
  • Strong working knowledge of rotating electrical machine mechanical challenges, structural characteristics and manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9000, BS EN and IEC 60034 standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexibly as per project and business requirements.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United Kingdom.

Qualifications – Preferred

  • Sole British Nationality and current or previous Security Check (SC) clearance.
  • Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) or enterprise resource planning (ERP) software such as Teamcenter or SAP.
  • Experience in scheduling, planning and programme management in an engineering environment.
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills with a track record of delivering results in cross‑functional teams.
