Job Description:

Lead Controls Engineer – Stafford, UKGE Vernova is looking for an experienced controls engineer to design low‑voltage control schemes for power transformers. The role covers the complete lifecycle from design through manufacture, testing, and HMI development.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare control schematics, specifications, general arrangement drawings, and cable schedules for control cabinets.
  • Interface with relays, tap‑changers, transformer components, and SCADA or central control systems.
  • Develop HMI solutions and support programming activities where required.
  • Select and specify components for ordering and manufacturing.
  • Review supplier drawings and support factory acceptance tests.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders across projects, tendering, manufacturing, quality, procurement, and other functions.
  • Maintain strong performance against key delivery measures such as on‑time delivery, right first time, and budget adherence.
  • Support continuous improvement through safe, high‑quality, and efficient engineering practice.

Qualifications

  • Hands‑on, collaborative controls engineer experience with power transformer projects.
  • Ability to design low‑voltage control schemes for power transformers.
  • Independent preparation of control schematics, specifications, and related engineering documentation.
  • Understanding of low‑voltage switchgear schematics and automation.
  • Knowledge of transformer design, including design calculations, active part design, insulation, windings, and tank design, is an advantage.
  • Expertise in controls, electrical, or instrumentation engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical and a document management system such as Windchill.
  • Experience with PLC programming or automation software is preferred but not essential.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence to coordinate with customers, suppliers, and internal teams.
  • Focus on safety, quality, delivery, and cost with a collaborative and accountable approach.
  • Formal education (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree) in Electrical, Instrumentation, Controls, Mechanical Engineering, or related field is desirable but total experience and achievements are most important.

Location & Working Arrangements

This is a permanent position based in GE Vernova’s Stafford, UK office. A hybrid working model allows flexibility to work from the office or from home.
