Lead Scala Developer (Consultant) – UK Government Programme

Location: Primarily Remote (Ad hoc travel to Newcastle – max once per fortnight)

Contract Length: Initial 3 months (likely extension)

Day Rate: £490 per day (Inside IR35)

Start Date: ASAP

Overview

We are supporting a key UK Government programme seeking an experienced Lead Scala Developer (Consultant level) to join an established delivery team.

This role will play a critical part in leading development efforts, driving best practices, and delivering high-quality solutions within a highly governed environment.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a high-impact public sector initiative with strong potential for extension.

Key Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Lead Developer / Tech Lead
  • Strong hands-on expertise in Scala development
  • Prior experience working within UK Government environments
  • Strong understanding and practical application of Test-Driven Development (TDD)
  • Ability to lead engineering teams and set technical direction
  • Experience working in highly regulated or governed environments
  • Available to start and interview at short notice
  • Comfortable working remotely with occasional travel to Newcastle

Technical Skills

Experience with the following is highly desirable:

  • Advanced Scala development in enterprise environments
  • Test automation frameworks aligned to TDD practices
  • Scalable system design and backend architecture
  • CI/CD and modern development workflows
  • Experience operating within secure, compliance-driven systems

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience within government departments
  • Exposure to large-scale public sector transformation programmes
  • Experience leading distributed engineering teams

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Leading development efforts as a hands-on technical expert
  • Designing and delivering robust, scalable backend solutions
  • Driving best practices across engineering (including TDD)
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across delivery and architecture
  • Supporting technical decision-making and mentoring developers
  • Contributing to the evolution of high-quality, compliant government systems

Additional Information

  • Must be eligible for BPSS clearance
  • Candidates must be UK-based
  • Occasional on-site collaboration in Newcastle required (max once per fortnight)
