Test Controller – Hydrogen System Test
The Test Controller will develop the management and control environment to enable testing to be planned and conducted in a safe and controlled manner. This role will expand to additional controller and test operators and engineers, so there are also team leading opportunities as the facility test environment matures.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead the safe, controlled, and efficient operation of the hydrogen test facility
- Transition the facility from commissioned hardware to a fully proceduralised and process-controlled environment
Develop a detailed understanding of:
- Facility and rig architecture o Cryogenic and hydrogen systems o Safety systems and interlocks
- Control and monitoring systems (PLC, SCADA, DAQ)
Develop, implement, and maintain:
- Operating procedures
- Test procedures
- Safe systems of work
- Coordinate and lead test operators and wider test team activities
- Ensure test readiness, oversee execution, and control facility configuration
- Maintain oversight of safety systems and hold authority to stop testing if required
- Ensure data integrity, traceability, and repeatability of all test activities Essential Skills:
- Experience in test engineering and test operations.
- Ability to develop procedures and operational documentation from first principles
- Experience of safety management in high-hazard environments
- Experience leading or coordinating multidisciplinary technical teams
- Ability to rapidly build system knowledge during commissioning and early operations
Advantageous Skills:
- Experience with industrial control and monitoring systems (e.g. PLC, SCADA, DAQ)
- Experience in commissioning or early-phase operation of new test facilities
- Background in hydrogen, cryogenic, or hazardous gas systems
- Familiarity with functional safety systems and methodologies (e.g. HAZOP, LOPA, Risk Assessment)
- Experience developing or using system simulations to support testing
- Previous involvement in facility operations or test programme management
- Demonstrated experience building processes and operational frameworks from scratch in immature environments Candidates who have previously operated in environments where processes and procedures were not fully established and have successfully contributed to building operational frameworks from scratch, will be particularly well suited.
- CompEx supervisors qualification would be useful.
