AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. The team supports AWS data centers and ensures continuous availability of servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment. The role is part of a diverse group of engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers.
AWS Data Centre Technician – the primary resolver for support issues, troubleshooting infrastructure on multiple operating systems.
Key responsibilities include:
Problem Solving
- Maintain system reliability by prioritizing and resolving tickets efficiently.
- Act as the technical troubleshooter for all system problems.
- Perform deep dives into Linux server issues and XEN service virtualization troubleshooting.
Technical
- Troubleshoot issues on various platforms, ranging from systems to power and mechanical.
- Remediate physical layer outages for both systems and network.
- Recover physical power issues on racks.
- Participate in data center power and cooling events.
Operations
- Meet 24×7 on‑call requirements and respond during shift rotations.
- Install and configure racks of hosts in line with internal SLAs.
- Triage and resolve trouble tickets for all devices in the region.
- Serve as the data center point of contact for all high‑severity issues.
- Physically replace server and network device parts.
- Ensure correct rotation of parts and spares.
- Help define metrics to increase customer uptime.
- Enforce Amazon’s security best practices.
- Interact with third‑party vendors and contractors.
- Contribute ideas to improve operational efficiency.
Project Management
- Participate in and deliver high‑impact small to mid‑scale projects.
- Attend team meetings for metric analysis and project status updates.
- Help build the world’s largest cloud infrastructure.
Mentoring
- Share knowledge and educate less technical staff on best practices for service owner issues.
A Day in the Life
- Troubleshoot facility and rack‑level events within internal SLAs.
- Perform root‑cause analysis of equipment failures.
- Adhere to all safety procedures while working.
- Respond to off‑hour emergency calls during on‑call rotation.
- Comply with all physical security procedures and policies.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Experience in computer networking.
- Experience working with Linux operating systems.
- Can lift and rack equipment up to 40 pounds.
- Experience with computer hardware troubleshooting and repair.
Preferred Qualifications
- Can work in cramped spaces or elevated locations while adhering to health & safety guidelines.
- Experience dealing effectively with customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.
- Experience managing work and priorities through a ticketing system.
- Experience with cabling infrastructure best practices and methodologies.
- Experience working in a data center environment (racking, stacking gear, cable management, hot/cold aisle containment).
