Senior Support Worker (Children’s Residential) (BBBH182) Eastbourne, England
Salary: GBP15.43 – GBP19.29 per hour + pension, gym, private healthcare, bonuses. The role involves hands-on care for children with complex learning disabilities while guiding and supporting less experienced colleagues. You’ll be the steady, skilled presence in the home, showing others how to use PECS and Makaton confidently, how to stay calm and regulated when a child becomes distressed, and how to deliver personal care with dignity.
This role is an excellent progression step into a future Team Leader position. You won’t lead shifts, but you will be the experienced adult helping the day run smoothly.
Responsibilities
- Model low-arousal, trauma-informed practice during challenging behaviour
- Support colleagues through incidents with calmness and consistency
- Coach staff in using communication tools like PECS, Makaton and visual routines
- Encourage predictable structure to build safety and reduce anxiety for children
- Assist the Team Leader with routines, engagement and daily organisation
- Promote communication, independence and meaningful activities for each child
Qualifications
- At least 1 year of experience working in a children’s residential home — essential
- Experience with SEN or learning disabilities, including autism, ADHD, epilepsy or sensory needs
- Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (England) or an accepted equivalent
- Confidence supporting non-verbal communication using PECS or Makaton
- Patience, emotional steadiness and a warm, supportive approach
- The ability to guide newer staff and model best practice
