Position

Band 3 Peer Support Worker – Full time (part‑time considered) – working in the Prospect Place (Rochdale) and Tatton Unit (Tameside) Male Low Secure Units.

About the role

Peer Support Workers use their lived experience of mental health difficulties to support people with mental health challenges on the ward and in community settings. The role involves 1:1 or group work, role modelling, goal setting and supporting service users in their recovery journey.

Main Duties

  • Demonstrate respect and values towards service users, carers and colleagues while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Act as a positive role model by sharing your recovery journey to inspire hope.
  • Use active listening and communication skills to help service users develop self‑understanding and recovery goals.
  • Ensure peer goals are reviewed regularly and liaised with the multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Model self‑awareness, advocacy, personal responsibility and promote confidence in peers.
  • Participate as a co‑facilitator in structured and formal group‑based interventions.
  • Advise staff of changes in risk, mental health or behaviour during interactions with service users.
  • Prioritise, manage and monitor workload and coordinate with the Team Manager.
  • Accompany service users to appointments, meetings and support access to community groups.
  • Provide 1:1 sessions when not engaged in structured activities.
  • Support service users to collaboratively write care plans with practitioners and monitor progress.
  • Teach coping, self‑help and self‑management techniques.
  • Use own initiative, experience and training to decide on interventions, with supervision from the multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Support the multi‑disciplinary team in promoting a recovery‑oriented environment.

Person Specification

  • GCSE in English to GCSE standard or equivalent.
  • Commitment to completing accredited Peer Support Worker training.
  • Willingness to undertake further training in line with peer support development.

Experience

  • Lived experience of mental health challenges and ability to reflect on those experiences.
  • Positive viewpoint to share with others.
  • Experience using self‑management tools and techniques.
  • Team or group experience.
  • Belief that people can live a meaningful life.
  • Experience reflecting on own experience and practice in one‑to‑one or group settings.
  • Experience supporting others to identify and work towards their own goals.
