Maintenance Assistant
NHS AfC: Band 3
The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust estates & Facilities is looking to recruit a Maintenance Assistant who has a strong understanding of building, electrical and plumbing maintenance.
This role provides support to the Maintenance Craftsperson and assists across all disciplines, working under the supervision of the Team Manager and the Maintenance Supervisor.
Main duties of the job
- Assist Maintenance Craftsperson (in all disciplines) as instructed by the Team Manager, working under the supervision of the Maintenance Craftsperson.
- Undertake unsupervised routine maintenance and minor repair work that does not require a fully qualified craftsman.
- Assist other trades as required by the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Use all relevant tools and equipment safely and effectively.
- Maintain workshops, stores, switch‑rooms, boiler‑house and plant‑rooms and surrounding areas clean and tidy as directed.
- Comply with statutory regulations including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
- Work overtime at short notice when required to meet Trust needs.
- Assist higher skill grades on new work and reactive calls.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of workshop safety practices.
- Undertake statutory planned, reactive maintenance tasks and inspections.
- Participate in training to maintain and develop skills in line with current and future service requirements.

- Carry out work in accordance with legislation, codes of practice and best practice guidance.
- Work safely observing Trust and departmental Health and Safety Policies and procedures.
- Use technology efficiently to meet Service Level Agreements and Key Performance Indicators.

- Contribute to CAFM system development and ensure accurate record keeping.
Administration
- Control and transfer information systems including completion of all paperwork required (job dockets and timesheets).

Key working relationships
- Maintain good communications with members of Trust staff at all levels including nursing staff.

Experience
- Basic understanding of construction, building engineering techniques.
- Good knowledge of tools and equipment used in maintenance activities.
- Experience working in a similar environment.
- Experience in an acute or non‑acute hospital environment.
- Working knowledge of Health and Safety.

Disclosures and additional requirements
- If successful, a Disclosure & Barring Service check will be required; the Trust will pay for the initial check and the cost will be deducted from salary over the first three months.
- All statutory security and health risk assessments will be completed as part of the pre‑employment process.
