Cardiac and Respiratory Healthcare Science Assistant

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Cardiac / Respiratory Healthcare Science Assistant to work as part of our friendly team providing diagnostic cardiology and respiratory services to both in‑patients and out‑patients. The post also involves administrative and reception duties, including dealing with patient and staff queries, managing clinics on the Trust IT systems and making and amending appointments.
The principal hospitals within County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust are University Hospital of North Durham, Darlington Memorial Hospital, Bishop Auckland Hospital and Shotley Bridge Hospital. The Cardiology and Respiratory Investigation Units provide a broad range of invasive and non‑invasive procedures. We are committed to learning and development opportunities for all staff.
Job Responsibilities
- Work as part of a team in a busy Cardio‑Respiratory Department, delivering high‑quality diagnostic services.
- Perform 12‑lead ECGs and other basic diagnostic procedures (technical competence is desirable but not essential).
- Support reception and administrative tasks, including managing clinic appointments and dealing with patient and staff enquiries.
- Provide flexibility to work across Trust sites, including Darlington Memorial Hospital, Bishop Auckland Hospital and other sites as required.
- Support professional development and contribute to staff training and clinical competency goals.
Minimum Qualifications
- Three GCSE passes at grade 4 or above (or equivalent), including English Language.
- Willingness to undertake or already hold the Society for Cardiac Science and Technology (SCST) Award in Electrocardiography within the first year of employment.
Experience
- Good understanding or experience of working in a healthcare environment.
- Experience of performing tests in a Cardiac and Respiratory diagnostic department, such as spirometry or ECGs.
- Experience of reception and administrative work.
Special Skills & Knowledge
- Organisational and administrative skills; IT literacy.
- Knowledge of data protection and maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Ability to use discretion and initiative to resolve routine queries.
- Flexible and adaptable approach to work and change.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Basic ECG interpretation and use of Trust IT systems.
Special Requirements
- Approachable, friendly, and able to put patients at ease across all patient groups.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
- Presentation of a professional image at all times.
- Valid full UK driving licence for driving posts.
Statutory Registration
- Member of SCST.
