Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: West Yorkshire

Role Overview

A leading bespoke lighting manufacturer is seeking a talented Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team in West Yorkshire. The successful candidate will play a key role in designing, developing, and optimising custom lighting products, transforming creative concepts into practical, manufacturable solutions. This is a hands‑on engineering role requiring both technical skill and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical designs for bespoke lighting systems from concept through to production
  • Prepare and interpret technical drawings, CAD models, and schematics
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers and workshop teams to ensure designs are manufacturable
  • Support small‑scale prototyping, testing, and design refinement
  • Specify materials, components, and manufacturing processes
  • Conduct mechanical calculations, tolerance analysis, and stress assessments where required
  • Provide technical guidance to production teams, including assembly instructions and quality standards
  • Maintain accurate documentation of design changes, test results, and product specifications

Essential Skills & Experience

  • HNC, HND, or degree in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD)
  • Strong mechanical design experience, including sheet metal, fabrication, and assembly considerations
  • Ability to read and produce detailed engineering drawings
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and materials
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem‑solving skills
  • Effective communication skills and a collaborative approach

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in lighting, architectural, or bespoke product design
  • Knowledge of low‑voltage systems and basic electrical considerations for mechanical components
  • Experience with small‑scale prototyping and workshop fabrication
  • Familiarity with quality standards and product testing
