Emergency Services Receptionist

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust – Band 2 receptionists within the Emergency Services.

Job Summary

Assisting in the administration for the reception areas in the Emergency Services. This post requires keyboard skills, excellent customer service experience and the ability to multitask whilst working in a busy, fast‑paced environment. The postholder must observe patient confidentiality, maintain a professional manner, work independently or under minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment and decision‑making skills under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Register patients and book patient appointments.
  • Ensure all necessary documents are available before triage.
  • Confirm demographic details with patients, paying particular attention to accuracy.
  • Escalate concerns to triage nurse for chest pain, stroke symptoms, shortness of breath, etc.
  • Complete the assault screen for external auditing.
  • Access and share care plans with authorized clinicians for vulnerable, at‑risk or frequent attenders.
  • Handle booking of overseas patients.
  • Print wristbands using SALUS.
  • Transfer or discharge patients using SALUS.
  • Book unknown patients using the unknown‑patient process.
  • Provide efficient personal service to patients, relatives and other callers as part of the Emergency Services Multi‑Disciplinary Team.
  • Promote the smooth running of the Department by maintaining effective communication within the Trust.

Qualifications

  • Essential: GCSE Maths and English grades 4-9 (A‑C); NVQ Level 2 in relevant subject or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • Desirable: A Levels or equivalent.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Essential: Previous demonstrable experience carrying out administrative duties; previous demonstrable experience working with the general public in a customer‑oriented role.
  • Desirable: Similar clerical demonstrable experience within a healthcare organisation; previous demonstrable experience using patient management systems.

Aptitude & Abilities

  • Numerate, literate.
  • Good computing skills, including email and Microsoft Office.
  • Accurate data entry onto the computer.
  • Ability to work well within a busy environment.
  • Ability to travel between sites.

Job Details

Contract: Permanent; Working Pattern: Full‑time (37.5 hours per week). Working sites include Derriford Hospital, the Cumberland Centre, Tavistock and Kingsbridge. Salary: £25,272 a year. Reference number: 216‑PL‑DC7953376. Closing date: 02 June 2026.
