The Role
As Principal Designeryou will be providing expert advice, planning, managing, monitoring and coordinating health and safety in the pre-construction phase of several simultaneously running complex substation projects, that typically include transformer/ switchgear replacements, new GIS arrangements, cable route connections, etc. This will include: identifying, eliminating or controlling foreseeable risks; ensuring designers carry out their duties.
Key Activities
- Ensure the company maintain compliance with their statutory duties as Principal Designer and Principal Contractor under the Construction, Design and Management Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015).
- Chair and coordinate Design Risk Review meetings throughout all stages of Design and Construction and maintain the associated Design Risk Register.
- Apply the principles of prevention to identify and eliminate unusual and significant hazards as well as control foreseeable risks.
- Ensure all designers (internally and externally) are competent to undertake their role under CDM.
- Actively embed in the Design team and challenge all aspects of buildability, maintainability and operability.
- Calculate the hours required to undertake the Principal Designer role on a project-by-project basis and ensure the Client provides sufficient time and resources to comply with their statutory duty.
- Submit F10’s and continuously monitor throughout the construction period to ensure validity is maintained.
- Compile Pre-Construction Information ensuring all safety critical information is highlighted and communicated to the relevant parties.
- Review, monitor and advise on the suitability of Construction Phase Plans to ensure statutory compliance.
- Develop Health and Safety Files to ensure all safety critical information for the future operation, maintenance and decommissioning of the assets is captured.
- Develop compliance reports, build and maintain excellent relationships with the Client.
- Visit sites to monitor progress and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Assist with procedural development and training roll out.
Qualifications
- Demonstrable experience undertaking the role of Principal Designer/ CDM Consultant on large and complex schemes.
- NEBOSH Construction or higher and a thorough understanding of health and safety regulations and how they apply to construction projects.
- A Civil or Electrical Engineering qualification (minimum HNC or equivalent NVQ Level 4).
- A professional accreditation such as APS, IOSH, ICE etc.
- A full UK Driving Licence.
- Highly developed computer literacy (Microsoft Excel, Word etc.).
