About the role
The Wren Project requires volunteers to offer listening support to people living with an autoimmune disease diagnosis. As a volunteer, you would provide remote one‑to‑one listening support to individuals.
Impact
Our volunteers provide a space for those in distress with an autoimmune disease to feel heard. Through listening and reflecting, our volunteers help individuals feel supported and less isolated. Here is some feedback:
- A Wren: “My volunteer has gently and skillfully supported me to reflect and reframe my anxieties, and facilitated me to look forward with more positivity. I am able to encounter setbacks with less fear.”
- A Wren: “Thank you – you’ve made the whole experience feel so safe, validating and welcoming. I felt able to be vulnerable emotionally and began to process my health issues.”
- A Wren: “I really felt able to build rapport and trust with my volunteer. It made a big difference to my coping.”
What are we looking for?
- Empathetic and understanding attitude
- Quiet and private space to conduct appointments
- Access to a computer, telephone and reliable internet connection
- Confidentiality, professionalism and reliability
- Monthly commitment: regular attendance (twice a month) for an initial 12‑month period
- Skill‑building: gain lifelong skills in deep listening and develop reflective skills by attending monthly reflective practice sessions
- 3+ years experience in a similar role
What will you be doing?
- Provide empathetic, non‑judgmental listening support to people living with autoimmune diseases (referred to as “Our Wrens”). Focus on allowing Wrens to express their feelings without offering advice or solutions.
- Participate in fortnightly 50‑minute sessions with two separate Wrens via telephone or video call.
- Undergo a 4‑week remote training program focused on listening skills and support of individuals with autoimmune diseases; complete a final one‑to‑one assessment to ensure readiness before matching.
- Receive ongoing support and opportunities to further develop listening skills from experienced volunteers, the operations team, and clinical supervisors.
