Maintenance Technician (Mechanical Bias)

Based at Hillington Industrial Estate laundry facility, the role is responsible for maintaining, repairing and supporting the safe operation of a wide range of mechanical and engineering systems within a busy industrial healthcare environment. It also supports the training and development of apprentices and adult trainees, and assists managers with training programme planning. Shift and weekend working is required and the position is eligible for a pay enhancement.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

  • Location: Hillington Laundry
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Hours: Full‑time (36 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern: 5 days over 7, including night shift and weekends

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe and comfortable environment for the provision of clinical care.
  • Use skills to ascertain desired action and expedite the best solution, implementing solutions into practice.
  • Interpret detailed manufacturer’s installation manuals, specifications, technical data, wiring diagrams and schematic drawings for building services, systems, plant and equipment.
  • Complete planned preventative maintenance in accordance with organisational and manufacturer’s recommendations, using appropriate tools and test equipment, and record details of work carried out.
  • Respond to breakdowns, evaluate the situation and take corrective action to minimise disruption and damage.
  • Use the Building Management System (BMS) to set parameters and record data for building services, providing correct environmental conditions and early warning of service faults (medical gas, heating, water, power, etc.).
  • Maintain, repair and commission patient‑related equipment and services such as sterilisers, washer disinfectors, operating lights and tables, dental chairs, medical gas, plant, ensuring a safe environment for staff and patients.
  • Carry out checks, repair, test and maintain specialised multi‑faceted hospital equipment (e.g. sterilisers, washer‑disinfectors) to required standards as per Hospital Technical Memorandum.
  • Measure up jobs for new installations and alterations, check plan drawings and on‑site plans, work out the best route to run supplies and services, and advise the supervisor of materials required.

Knowledge, Training, Qualifications and/or Experience Required

  • Completed an apprenticeship in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or Plumbing (equivalent to SVQ Level 4, Higher National Diploma, Modern Apprenticeship – Level 4, Professional Development Awards – SCQF 8‑9).
  • Knowledge of procedures for mechanical and gas maintenance and repair of electrical equipment; BTEC/HNC Level plus relevant post‑apprenticeship training or equivalent experience.
  • Attend training courses as required by Estates Management and NHS policies, procedures; specialised training in systems and equipment to comply with laws, national guidelines and standards; regular re‑certification to maintain CPD.
  • Low Voltage SHTM 06‑02 (one‑week training and certification, revalidation every three years) and BS 7671 IEE wiring regulations.
  • Mandatory first‑aid duties for working with electricity to the level of competence and training that meets the safe code of practice.
  • Level 3 C&G 2391 Award in the inspection, testing and verification of fixed wiring systems.
  • Level 3 Awards in the in‑service inspection and testing of electrical equipment (PAT) G&C 2377 Pt 1 and the management requirements for maintenance of electrical equipment G&C 2377 Pt 2.

Additional Information

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part‑time working hours will be reduced on a pro‑rated basis. A corresponding increase in hourly rate will apply, ensuring overall pay remains unchanged.
