JOB TITLE: Geography Teacher – Post-Primary
REPORTS TO: Principal
Professional Duties
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons
- Teaching, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to them, including setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupils in school and elsewhere
- Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils
- Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and any class or group of pupils assigned to them
- Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational, social matters, further education and career pathways, including making relevant records and reports
- Making records of and reporting on the personal and social needs of pupils, where appropriate
- Communicating and consulting with parents of pupils
- Communicating and cooperating with approved external persons or bodies
- Participating in meetings for curriculum planning, school administration or pastoral arrangements
- Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils and groups
- Participating in staff development schemes and performance reviews, reviewing teaching methods and programmes, and pursuing further training
- Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on course preparation, teaching materials, methods, assessment and pastoral arrangements
- Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils, safeguarding health and safety on premises and during authorised activities
- Participating in meetings related to curriculum or school administration
- Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations, assessing pupils, recording and reporting assessments, and supervising exams
- Contributing to selection, professional development, induction of probationary teachers, and coordination or management of other teachers’ work
- Handling administrative and organisational tasks related to duties, including supervising support staff and allocating equipment and materials
- Registering pupil attendance and supervising pupils at assemblies and during school sessions
- Managing staff cover responsibilities and adjustments for absences
- Complying with required working hours, breaks and attendance rules as specified by the regulations
Essential Criteria
- Qualifications / Professional Membership
- Obtain required qualifications by the start date of appointment
- Hold a teaching qualification recognized for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland
- Hold a degree or teaching qualification prepared to teach Geography as the main subject
- Completed during shortlisting assessment and may be explored during interview/selection
- Experience
- Demonstrable experience teaching Geography at Key Stage 3 and 4, achieving positive learning outcomes
- Experience using a range of teaching strategies to meet pupils’ learning needs
- Experience using digital media and technology to enhance teaching and learning
- Other
- Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland before appointment
- Subject to a pre‑employment check
- Knowledge
- Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum
- Understanding of safeguarding and child protection policy and practice
- Knowledge of SEND Code of Practice
- Awareness of a range of teaching strategies for diverse learners
- Knowledge of IT systems such as digital classroom tools, media and mobile technologies
- Understanding of current assessment methods to inform teaching

- Effective teaching and classroom management to inspire and challenge pupils’ achievement
- Ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment
- Collaboration skills to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community

Desirable Criteria
- Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of one year demonstrable experience teaching Geography at Key Stage 4 to achieve positive learning outcomes
- Ability to teach Travel and Tourism at Key Stage 4 to Post 16 level
Disclosure of Criminal Background
The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people or in specified places as ‘regulated activity’. In the event the applicant is recommended for a post involving regulated activity, Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background will be required. The applicant will be expected to cover the cost of the certificate.
