Working Pattern

Full‑time role involving a mix of long days, nights and 11.5‑hour shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.

Main Duties

  • Observe, monitor and record patients’ conditions (temperature, pulse, respirations and weight).
  • Communicate with patients, relatives and carers, assisting with clinical duties as required.
  • Provide personal care, including infection prevention and control, feeding, personal hygiene, and overall reassurance, comfort and safety.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels within and outside the department.
  • Participate in ward/unit meetings and facilitate effective communication with staff.
  • Support the delivery of planned care under the direction of Registered Nurses and Senior Clinical Staff.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide care in a fast‑paced 21‑bed Trauma and Orthopaedic ward.
  • Deliver high‑quality care and support to patients throughout their stay.
  • Engage in continuous professional development through in‑house training and external courses.
  • Maintain daily communication with nursing staff and other healthcare professionals.
  • Assist in record‑keeping of patient information, both handwritten and electronic.
  • Adhere to confidentiality, safeguarding and health & safety regulations.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Understanding of strict confidentiality requirements.
  • Previous experience in a care environment or demonstrated caring nature and life experience.
  • Working knowledge of complex care needs, including safeguarding, domestic abuse and mental health.

Qualifications and Training

  • GCSEs (grade C/5 or above) in maths and English or equivalent Functional Skills Level 2.
  • Care certificate (or willing to obtain).

Specific Skills

  • Basic computer and keyboard skills.
  • Fine motor skills for venepuncture, phlebotomy and other clinical tasks.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under instruction, under pressure and as part of a team.
  • Record‑keeping competency in handwritten and electronic formats.
  • Empathy, sensitivity, and adaptability in communication style.
  • Stress management for self and others.
  • Support at times of emotional distress.
  • Willingness to undertake new skills and training.
  • Behavioural flexibility in changing and challenging situations.
  • Reliability, punctuality and a positive commitment to diversity and equality policies.
  • Relevant healthcare competencies for the area of work.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This post requires a Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exception Order) 1975 Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Salary: £25,760 to £27,476 a year, pro‑rata.
