Great opportunity for a practical, reliable individual with hands‑on DIY and gardening skills to join us as a Maintenance Assistant.
Your new role
Working across Portsmouth City Council’s regulated and provider services (residential homes, nursing homes, short breaks and day services) you will keep buildings, grounds and equipment safe, clean and well maintained. Duties include routine internal repairs including minor decorating and completing statutory and routine safety checks while recording findings. You will be responsible for maintaining external grounds and gardens, cleaning and maintaining tools, equipment and storage areas as well as managing cleaning and domestic supplies. You will liaise with contractors and ensure work is completed to standard in line with safe working procedures and respond to deliveries and assist with moving/handling tasks when required. The role includes occasional lone and out of hours duties.
Who is the person
You will have hands‑on practical experience in building maintenance and general DIY and gardening skills. With a clear understanding of health & safety (including COSHH and risk assessment), you will have the ability to complete and record statutory checks (fire, water/legionella, alarms). You will have good communication skills to enable you to communicate effectively with residents, staff and contractors. The ability to use your own initiative is required as you will need to prioritise and carry out routine repairs and preventative maintenance. You will have the ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service (including occasional lone and out of hours duties). You will be required to hold a full driving licence as you will need to work between the units and move equipment between sites, so you must be physically fit.
