Ward Foodservice Assistant

Exciting opportunity to work within the catering department at Milton Keynes University Hospital.

Role Overview

Work in a team passionate about providing a good patient experience. Deliver lunch, evening meals, drinks and snack rounds on ward.

Provide patients with food, take orders via an electronic tablet, cook meals at ward level, sanitise and clean crockery and cutlery.

Paid enhanced rates for weekends and bank holidays.

Uniform, training and locker provided.

Working Hours

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 16:00-19:30 (14 hours)
  • Saturday, Sunday 16:00-19:30 (7 hours x2)
  • Monday to Friday 16:00-19:30 (17.5 hours)
  • Monday to Friday 10:00-14:00 (20 hours)

Main Duties

  • Adhere to Department’s Food Hygiene Policy and Assured Safe Catering Document.
  • Carry out monthly calibration of electronic temperature probes in all units.
  • Maintain accurate records for all supplies issued.
  • Be aware of and have working knowledge of COSHH.
  • Prepare basic meals such as sandwiches, salads, soups and vegetables as required.
  • Assist nursing staff in preparing breakfast and beverage trolleys and collect trays.
  • Collect finished meal trays and beverages, return to ward kitchen and load into dishwasher.
  • Handle waste food, return to central dishwash and manage insulated trolleys.
  • Prepare beverage trolley and serve beverages and snacks, ensuring dietary requirements are met.
  • Check with nurse in charge for changes to patients or dietary status.
  • Ask patients for meal orders, ensure suitability, answer menu questions.
  • Transport insulated trolleys with food items to the relevant ward.
  • Store chilled meals in ward fridge for meal service.
  • Set up patient trays for meal service.
  • Check with nursing staff for new patients, discharges, bed moves and dietary changes.

Qualifications and Knowledge

  • Level 1 Food Safety Certificate, Food Safety Level 2 or working towards.
  • Experience working as part of a team.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Flexible approach to duties and tasks.
  • Ability to maintain accurate written records.
  • Knowledge of dietary/allergy requirements.
  • Ability to use a PC tablet.
  • High standard of personal hygiene.
  • Ability to accommodate the demands of the post and perform duties with reasonable aids and adaptations.
