Job Purpose / Responsibilities
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness throughout the ward, following schedules and procedures.
- Prepare and serve food, ensuring patient choices and preferences are accommodated and Trust policies on temperature, cooking times and quality control are met.
- Carry out duties in accordance with Health & Safety, Food Hygiene legislation and COSHH.
- Record and report on cleaning schedules, stock levels and any incidents.
- Assist with procurement and ordering of supplies and help maintain the ward environment, including linen, dry linen and waste disposal.
- Interact professionally with patients, relatives and visitors, supporting patient hygiene and encouraging self‑care.
- Attend training and retraining sessions on Food Hygiene, Health & Safety, Fire safety and participate in supervision and personal development reviews.
Principal Duties
- Support patient care by performing day‑to‑day cleaning duties, monitoring hygiene, and advising staff.
- Ensure meals are delivered on time, following standard ward menus and accommodating patient preferences.
- Securely remove waste and dry linen from the ward and store line items appropriately.
- Maintain linen supplies, identify shortfalls and coordinate re‑stocking with the Senior Housekeeper.
- Provide general cleaning of all ward areas and maintain the dining facilities in a clean, presentable state.
- Monitor usage of cleaning materials and equipment, ensuring safe and effective cleaning.
- Maintain accurate records related to cleaning schedules and catering services.
- Respond to urgent cleaning needs, reprioritising duties as required.
- Ensure compliance with ward personal safety plans and reporting of defects, breakages and incidents.
Qualifications
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to undertake training and apply learning to work practices.
- Evidence of relevant job training.
- Health and Safety certificate.
Experience
- Planning, preparing and cooking appropriate menus, ensuring a varied and nutritional diet and storing and preparing food safely.
- Maintaining high standards of cleanliness within the ward and undertaking domestic duties.
- Completing all required records and reports.
- Experience of working with adults with complex mental health problems.
Knowledge & Skills
- Initiative and ability to work independently.
